Default Vtec Problem

I have a 94 Civic B16a. when it hits 5,800rpm I can hear the Air intake gasping for more air therefore i'm assuming that the Vtec is engaging but the power seems to be flat. Does anyone have any ideas why this could be ?
Cheers

Do you actually hear the VTEC crossover? On my 00 Si its at 5,500RPM stock...should feel a small power increase, but from what im reading, it doesnt seem like its engaging.

you shouldnt have to assume that vtec is engaging... if it is you will know it... check your oil level... is the cel on?

The crossover point was between 5,500-6,000rpm. It sounded just like my friends when the vtec engaged. My oil level is fine, cel is not on everything seems fine. Just no extra little boost or any power different.
