Default vtec problem

i have a 97 gsr and i dont think my vtec is working so i unplugged my vtec solinoid and drove the car. Well i got no cel in vtec range also in high rpm range it sounded like a big air leak. What could be the problem. Im guessing somthing electrical sence im getting no cel with the soliniod unplugged but i have no idea about the air leak noise.

P.S. the car uses alot of oil but i always keep it at a good level.

Big air leak.... as in exhaust? or as in the cold air intake you have on.

Did you just unplug the solenoid to see if it makes a difference? Like whether or not vtec was working in the first place?
