Default vtec working off and on

I've been noticing this now for about 2 weeks now. It pulls hard in first and second gear but then after 3 gear it doesn't seem to be working, or it will engage and then disengage. It seems like it will work when it wants to. I have no cel either. its on first gen b16a. I have the right amount of oil also. I not sure of what all to check like vtec soleniod voltage. I need help fellows any advice would be helpful.

do you hear it engage? because vtec dosent make as much power as you go up in gears.
but anyway, here is my troubleshooting guide, it will cover almost everything.

Everything else checks out except I need to check my vtec solenoid next, hopefully that is the problem.

nope, the VTEC solenoid grounds itself by being attached to the head. it would have to fall off to not ground properly

it sounds like it might be oil pressure related...

is your oil level OK?

t..

I've just finished baffling my sump as mine was doing this exact same thing. You'll probably find that your running to light an oil too.....

Yeah my oil level is ok. I might try different weight oil and see if that helps. I usually use castrol synethic 5-30, I guess I going to have to try 10-30 usaully though 10-30 isn't that much of a difference from 5-30. It can't be to heavy because its cold out and soon as I start my car I hear the valves tapping becasue the oil didn't shot up to that part of the engine yet, it always does that in the winter time, not in the summer though.

That's exactly what I would have said... Is your oil pan dented at all... My friend's B16A from HMO had this same problem... VTEC did the exact same thing... pick up tube was smashed in... Lack of oil let the thrust washers spin out and destroy the crank, block, and cracked all of the pistons.. Pretty shitty... But yea I would pull the oil pand and check everything... pump too... sorry if that was already mentioned but i just skimmed through the above posts.... Peace

Ok, looks like I won't be doing anything for spring break except working on my car. I'm going to check the soleniod then the oil pump and then check my oil pan to see if I smashed it on anything, even though I don't recall me hitting anything but I"m still going to check.
