dyno tuning a relativley stock jdm b16... power to be found???
jdm b16, h/i/e, clutch/flywheel, i was told today that there is a good amount of poewr to be found if tuned on the dyno... so i'm thinking, any mod i would want to do past this point is going to be costly, so why not drop 100$ on some dyno pulls and tuning for a notable gain...??? if im wrong let me know thanks
How and what are you going to be tuning? Do you have cam gears? An adjustable fuel pressure regulator? Some sort of reprogrammable ecu? With your posted list of parts, the only thing you could "tune" is your ignition timing.
thats very true lol...
ok let me add this...
assuming i converted to obd1, and ran hondata as management...
and thats my question is it worth doing it with the mods that i have?

It could be worth a few HP. But more if you had cams. Adjustable cam gears are also a good idea. Valve timing can actually vary by a few degrees from one motor to another. And this makes a difference in the power output from one motor to another. With cam gears, power can definitely be found. Especially if your motor got 'unlucky' with the valve timing it got stuck with from the factory.

well i said.. hell why not go get it dyno'd....
my base run created 134.5hp and 99tq...
that was at stock ignition timing...
since all i was able to do was adjust ignition timing, I did 2 more pulls, advancing the timing to 18 then up to 20...
my final outcome was 138.9hp and 104.5tq...
ill post the graph when i can get it scanned if you guys are intrested...
Considering I only wanted a baseline number, im happy with the results... bout 4hp and 5tq gain through the whole range, nowhere did it dip... with max power at about 7400..
some reason it was rev limiting at about 7800, any reason for that i thought a 1st gen revs to 8100... (i also found out my stock tac is over 1k off at upper rpms)
dyno'd at Innovative Tuning. - Real cool guys there...

I think you have an automatic ecu. That would be the reason for the lower rev-limit and the lower hp numbers. With I/H/E, you should be somewhere in the mid-140's hp wise.

************!!!!!!!! that would suck ***, but i still ruin every stock b16 i've ever went against so i can't wait to get the right computer in there... (unless it already is)
let me ask you this... how can i tell? i'll go find out right now

if you open the ecu, there will be like 3 extra chips on the board. do a search for like "how to tell if i got an auto ecu" or something like that.
yes, very!! I hear you can loose 10+hp with the auto cams and they dont rev out as high...
correct me if im wrong

This will work for usdm OBD-1 ECUs:
Read the code on it. The 2nd to last # on an automatic ECU will have a 5.
If it is anything but a five then it is a manual ECU.
Jdm OBD-1 ECUs:
Reade the code on it.. if the last 3 digits are 900 or 901 it is an automatic ECU.

Take the cover off the ecu. On the top board(upper right hand corner) there will be a large "AT" printed on it if its auto. I got stuck with one when i bought my swap.

ok guys im going to run out and check that right now... i think its pretty shitty how i bought a motor transmission and ecu all from the same place and my 5 speed y1 came with an auto ecu... well i wont talk **** till i find out which it really is.. stand by!
