Default JDM type R 4-1 Header question

I have done a search but with no luck have not come up with answer. I have 01 gsr and bought a jdm type r header, does anyone know exactly how long the aftermarket cat will have to be, or do i have to go with a test pipe (too loud). any advice appreciated

so then all i need to do is find a way to have the 2.5" collector fit the cat? other than that the header will reach the cat??

You should contact Dave Stadulis (SMSP)...he would know for sure and he could get you one all ready to go. I got one from him just this past Friday and it fits like a glove. It might be a little more expensive than some other route, but the quality is top notch and you won't have to take it anywhere else to get it done. All you'd need is common tools and a little patience working with all those corroded bolts.

I have a '94 GSR with the JDM ITR header so I think the length is different...if not I could go out and measure mine for ya?

Here ya go...I'd just email him. His username on HT is SMSP. He's a busy guy so he might not get back to you immediately but the turnaround on my cat was about 10 days from the moment I ordered it to my doorstep. Great product...can't emphasize that enough.

smsproducts@adelphia.net

As far as length goes I'm not the one to answer that question. You'd have to ask someone else. I was just offering to measure the length of my cat on my '94 GSR just in case anyone wanted to know.

I don't know if the 00-01 GSR vs. 94-99 are the same or not since I have nothing to compare against. If you're curious as to what the cat from Dave looks like, take a look at this thread:

https://honda-tech.com/zerothread?id=1128725

I have the spun metal one (and I think that's the one he sells now since it had the best flow numbers). From the looks of the picture, I think it's about 12" long. It'll have flanges on it when you receive it. Welds are perfect and like I said, it fits as if it were OEM.

As far as other headers are concerned...
I've never had another header on the car before. I'll just say this. The midrange seems better, not much difference down low, haven't had it past 6K yet (I just put it on this Saturday). It's loud as **** though. Lot more reverberation and a little raspy. I think the lack of the OEM cat really makes it noisier so take that for what it's worth. I got the OEM b/c I wanted to go with the sleeper look. An upper heatshield will be going on soon!

oh...did you guys want stock cat lengths? I was assuming you wanted to know the length of the high flow cat for use with the JDM ITR header. I can go measure the stocker right now

I want to say the 01 gsr is the same as the type R length. in that case i think you need about a 17 inch cat or test pipe. Regardless, just call dave (screen name SMSP) he will get you the exact size you need with all the mounting hardware
