Chipping a stock pm6.
Quick question.
I've got a bonestock pm6 in my car right now, and i've got the y8 underhood, not running the vtec right now.
I was wondering if there was a way I could get the pm6 chipped to some sort of specs that would allow for the extra needed fuel and such for when the vtec activates.
Also, I have a fields sfc-vtec controller that isnt hooked up. Can I use that to activate vtec, and then just add more fuel after the set vtec point? I dont know the exact settings but say +15% or something to that effect from the activation point up to whatever?
So basically, can I use JUST the fields unit to run the vtec? I know most of you are going to say, "Just convert to obd1" but I dont want to, heh. I just want to know if I can do it this way, either just the fields, or the fields w/ a chipped pm6.
Thanks for any help.

You can have someone burn a chip to put in your PM6 that will advance the timing, add fuel and all that. You will still need something to activate VTEC, just get the VTEC controller or an RPM switch or VAFC or something. Then just solder it in. I'm running a custom 'mini-me' chip with my A6/Y8 and I love it.
BTW, there isn't really a way to convert P28 numbers to OBD0, so you will need to find someone that can burn a tune for you. There is a program online somewhere that is supposedly working pretty good for the mini-me setups.

Thanks for the reply. It doesnt have to be the exact specs of the p28, just something that will give the extras needed for the vtec.
But am I able to still run the vtec using nothing but the Fields unit by itself? No ecus mods or anything else?

The stock ecu can activate VTEC with the right tweaks. I haven't had a chance to play with it myself yet, but many people have had luck adding VTEC to the PM6 using either the AC clutch wire or enabling the auto trans lockup line and using that.

Thanks for all the replies guys, its very appreciated. So it looks like I am going to get the pm6 chipped and run it alongside the fields vtec controller. I found someone local to me that can do it aswell, awesome.

Voila, completely tuneable engine management w/vtec support.
You can also send your ecu off to Xenocron and he will chip it for you (http://www.xenocron.com).

All the tunability of Hondata for... $50!!!
I've got this setup on my coffee table waiting for the head to come back from the machine shop.

I figured someone would have figured that out by now, but I wasn't sure. Good info, that rocks!

No, TurboEdit activates VTEC using the A/C clutch wire that drdisco69 mentioned.

what year is your PM6? alot easier to chip a 90-91 88-89 is a little more rough... different microprocessor, doesn't chip as easily. 90-91 cost you a bit less. i have heard of the ps9 being used on the automatic line / ac clutch wire as activation.
i don't quite get the ac clutch wire though anyone understand it? what does the ac have to do with an ecu? lol i thought that was all in the climate control box, is there for some freak reason a clutch wire that goes into the ecu...?

How dare you call Honda a freak!
No, but really, the ecu controls the AC compressor clutch. The climate control unit sends a request through pin 12 on C452, the yellow/green wire. Then the ECU knows to control the radiator and condensor fans and the AC compressor clutch.
The ECU is the pimp of the car, everything else is it's bitch.

I run a pm6 with turboedit on my b16 ef. Works perfect. I use the a/c clutch line to trigger vtec. I like it better than my pr3.
Here are some links - its very easy to setup up.

From what I understand, the ECU disengages the AC clutch at a certain throttle position (80% or higher, for instance) to cut parasitic losses so you have more power when you need it. TurboEdit just reprograms that ECU output to engage/disengage based on RPM.
BTW, comments about the AC clutch are second-hand knowledge. May or may not be accurate (but I do know that the AC on my 99 Integra would cut out under hard acceleration).

wow, i learned something new, thanks! what software do you use to modify your maps? i was lookin twards uberdata, turboedit kept takin a dump on me last time... got pissed off and gave up lol. they both seem to lock up pretty easily(i dont get along with VB programs)
Uberdata is very raw, not too polished, and gives me hell with everything I try to do. Maybe it's just me, I dunno. Chrome will always get
from me, it's damn near professional looking and works extremely well. Hey, it's free to try, so why not?

For me, there's no choice. TurboEdit is preOBD. Uberdata and Crome are OBD1. I've heard of some of the more experienced users moving to Crome, but right now there are still more people using Uberdata.
If you're preOBD, TurboEdit is the only halfway professional choice.

Turboedit runs perfect on my b16a. In case you don't know the ecu interpolates the maps so you can tune to an acceptable a/f with a pm6 and a b16a.
Just ask all the turbo b16a people running turboedit.
I have heard good things about bre also, and I am about to chip my pr3 and check it out. What rpm support does it have on a pr3 or pw0?

To bad this is Wrong. Hondata has never supported the PM6 ECU and recently dumped support for the OBD0 PR3/PWO ECUs
But anyways...what most everyone is saying is correct.
