Pretty much any car that is inexpensive and reliable will be good for a first autocross car as long as it doesn't have a high center of gravity, such as an SUV, minivan, or truck (Tacoma guy, don't even start...).

A smaller car is going to tend to be less expensive (in a lot of ways) and also lighter, which is a plus in autocross. Any of the common economy sedans/hatches would be fine. Civic, Integra, Celica, Sentra, Protege, Corolla, xA, tC, that kind of thing. I personally prefer a hatch of some sort since that makes it easier to haul a bunch of stuff around if necessary.

i think any working car can autoX, it's just whether you want to be competitive later on in your autoX career (i'm going to assume you're not competitive right now since you're new). I autoX in my 02 accord coupe automatic...it works fine and i scare some ppl when I beat them in it.

How about a nice, low to the ground, 1746 lbs curb weight, rear wheel drive, convertable, that fits the price range?

I'm currently running my 00 gsr daily driver for auto-x. But as suggested, almost any reliable compact is probably fine to learn with. You might want to look into 89 - 00 civics, either coupe or hatchback, as a nice starting point. They are relatively inexpensive, have alot of parts available, and get good gas mileage as daily drivers.

Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS (STS)
Early 90s Civic Hatch (STS)
Audi 90 (probably not reliable enough but a potentially winning H Stock car)
Last Gen Camaro or Firebird with a V6 (good for G Stock)
1st gen Neon ACR (GS)
2nd Gen Toyota MR2 non-turbo (ES)
1.6 liter Miata or early 1.8 liter (ES)

i would like to get this 88 crx si that is near my house but i don't know if my parents will allow me to. not that it is fast they just don't think it will be very reliable. i would like to get it and run it in the stock class for awhile and then maybe mod it down the road.

Do two seater cars have higher insurance? (especially for younger drivers?)

If so, you may just want to get a Civic hatch.

Why not? Is it a rusty POS or something?

Yes. The CRX Si is considered a sports car by most if not all insurance providers.

89-91 Civic Si would be my pick, with 92-95 Civic Si close after that. Both are great drivers training tools when stock, ie you must focus on driveing, the ine and how smooth you are. But at the same time handle well enough and are quick enough to not be chore to drive. With either you will have more room for anything you could want to take to a race. The 89 Si is the car to have in STS, and both make good competive(although not really the best) cars in stock class, and in street prepared, prepared and Steet mod down the road. Good luck though what part of Ohio are you from if you get a car, you probably see me if form the North east ohio area.

i'm south of Lima about 10 miles, or about 45 mins north of Dayton, Do u go to the Toledo Airport? If so what car do u drive and what color is it? I thought that atuocross looked like a lot of fun after i went up to Toledo with my brothers this past week.

here is the crx that i was talking about before

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors...&rd=1

what do u guys think about this with the price? i know it needs some TLC but i don't mind that. the price for a crx is high compared to Cal. so keep that i mind people from the west. i think this would be a good car to learn how to drive good on and just run in the stock class.

Think about it. There is a reason it has had 0 bids in 7 days. Its not worth the work you would have to put into it, and it probably has some surprises in store for whoever buys it.

Well pretty much any sport compact car (civic, neon, focus, whatever) will do pretty good as long as you have good tires. The stiffer sidewalls make a hell of a difference.

If I had to recommend you a car though... probably a Nissan NX2000 or Infiniti G20 (same car but four doors). Awesome handling, pretty good torque (SR20DE), tons of potential. But if you live somewhere where there's snow be sure to check the strut towers (in the hatch compartment, lift the carpet and look at the towers). They rust like crazy.

A CRX would be another awesome car but the insurance is probably gonna kill you.

civic hatch, any year.

i'm partial to the EG myself but they'd all be reliable, fun, and easy to drive.

nice short wheelbase, nice and light, cheap to mod, cheap to fix (relatively), cross-platform compatibility with alot of other hondas, plenty of spares running around, and i think they look good.
