Lower Ball Joint
I have tried search and found loads of topics on this, but none of real help to me.
How do i remove this ? do i hammer it upwards or downwards ?

Also, the dustcap, how do you get this off.

I really appreciate anybodys help on this.

Make sure that the C-Clip has been removed from the ball joint first, then try to hammer it up. If that doesn't work, swing by any suspension shop and have them press it out. IF they charge you anything it'd be like $10 to get it pressed out. The new one should be able to be tapped in with a hammer and set the C-clip.
I am having the same situation of removing the ball joint.
The C-Clip......is it on the top Or lower part of the joint??
I removed the metal ring(wrapped around twice) on the lower part of the joint. This isn't the C-Clip, is it??
THanks.

alright, i will tell everyone how to remove this without damaging anything since i replaced mine yesterday after it broke........
First remove the whole assembly and put into a vice so you have both hands free.
there is a c clip, at least on my 88 crx si there was one, all it is is a clip on the lower end of the ball joint, it has a hole at both ends where they come together, there is a special tool to get this off.
Then, use a putty knife and cut away the old bushing on the lower part, makes removal a lot easier.
Then just get a hammer and pound that sucker out.
Next, just wipe clean the hole where the ball joint goes in and use a c clamp to push it thru, there is a ball joint kit you can buy which makes installation a lot easier. The new one might not have a c clip, thats ok.
Hope this helps.

If the new ball joint didn't come with a c clip, reuse the old one. IMO driving w/o the c clip is dangerous.

yeah, disregard with someone said earlier. There IS a c-clip, and if its not there, there is a problem. Once the clip is removed, its pretty easy to get out. At least in my experience.
the balljoint is pretty easy i did both of mine last weekend, took me about 2 hours.. just take the knuckle and set it on the ground with the top of the knuckle against something that wont move, like a concrete wall or something, take a 5 pound hammer and smack that balljoint out, make sure the C-clip is out, and you might want to remove the rotor so you dont smack it by accident with the hammer, then just tap in the new one

This is one another good post.
I hope admins add DIY FAQ to stickies. And link thesekinda posts up.
Just like good topic of replacing rack end bushing.
Admins. Do you think it would be good idea? I think it would be very helpful to all of us.

That's my another problem, getting the knuckle free from the outer tire rod.
I can't get the tire rod back off from the knuckle. And the nut(female) that's joined with the male(stripped from previous alignment...I believe).....so couldn't take out this way either.

I went to autozone, and they do not have the SNAP-RING Pliers. So, I used flat head screwdrivers to remove the C-clip ring.
My other post...Axle removal alternative has all the updates of my problem.

now can someone direct us to where we can get ball joints for a fair price. hondaautomotive sells it for 21 but after calling up several places im getting ridiculous prices like 31 dollars at napa. so whose got the hookups? before i go on egay and buy the control arm and lower ball joint kit.
if you cant get the tie rods off because the nut is stripped on the ball joint then your either gonna have to got a kit that takes rusted or stripped nuts off (craftsman makes one i believe) and buy a new nut, or buy new tie rod ends and cut the old ones off at the ball joint and replace the whole thing.. cause theres no way your gonna pound out the ball joint with the knuckle on the car

I bought mine from autozone for 25 also. Had to pay some dude at the local alignment shop to hammer it out though. I was having problems hammering on it.

I bought a pair of pliers and made my own with the grinder. And it worked!
Want to update that the ball joint has replaced. Everything is put back, and it feels fine.
Thanks for your guys help!

I checked and there's no near by Harbor Freight here in NYC area. Future tool list: Big a$$ hammer!
