Default first engine wash, got a question

like to keep the interior clean

I think this is the first wash ever, i think it looks good for an engine bay thats 15 years old.

Anyways hopefully that engine will be turboed this summer, first i have to do a compression test and make sure the engine is healthy, What compression numbers should i expect from the zc 1.6 (i think it is the same as the d16a6)?

Also i have another question, is the antifreeze reserve container really necesary? because i have seen people that dont have them and i was just wondering...

Hopefully i will be taking the timing belt cover off this weekend, is it unsafe to not have it?

thanks for the imput
will also be removing ac system shortly, gotta make some room for boost
please share any thoughts

Nice Civic Leave your overflow alone Unless you like to make a mess. I doubt the cars you saw had the overflow completley removed, just relocated.

why would you want to do this... it could be potentially dangerous. Hypothetically a rock could fly up in there and really screw crap up. I mean if you really wanted to go with out it you could but I really dont see the point. Just leave it on.

PS: Looks good... keep it that way

my timing belt cover hasn't been on since jan, when i did the headgasket and popped the valve cover on to verify it ran, and never bothered to take it off to get the cover on again.

well theres all thease pepole telling u to take it off. well i'm not one of them. i had it off and i wasworking on my belts, droped a bolt down there, just had the top off not the whole thing, i was one lucky **** because the belt only skiped one tooth and spit it out hard (i still have the dent in the hood to prove it.) so i'm saying leave it on. it'snot worth the long sleepless nights

thats one rusty motor mount Ive got a DOHC, and for what its worth, I still have my cover on... I guess it'd be useful to have it off if u had an adjustable timing gear, but I also took out all the plastic **** in the fender wells, and under the motor, so I'd be a lil afraid of rocks and glass and **** getting up there

you will have a totally new look when something gets jammed in there and a chunch of your engine flys through your hood or something.

If you really want a different look just take it off and paint it black... or swap a new motor in there.

About the timing cover I too would recommend it staying on. In fact someone with an Accord just destroyed there engine last week because of this. It was towed into my work and something got in there and broke 5 teeth on the cam gear. I have mine on because I have heard some horror stories from people leving it off.

I think the timing belt cover has two parts, a lower and an upper, so how about taking out the upper and leaving the lower part on?

That's because on a DOHC the upper cover appears larger than a SOHC and looks like the whole cover is off.

The antifreeze over flow container is necessary. When your call cools off, it sucks in coolant. If its not there, it would suck in air.

Also you can take the timing belt cover off but why, if you want to see moving parts, get a clear distributor cap.

takin it off wont hurt anything immediately- and you dont need to worry about rocks or anything.

but it will leave your belt exposed to more dust/grime/oil/whatever, so it will wear faster. not worth it on a dd imho, but it depends on what you do with the car.
