Default Random misfire CEL 74!

Ok, im getting a cel 74 (misfire). But the thing is, my car drives fine and shows no sign of misfire. Only happens when im using my obd2 p72, my obd1 p72 runs w/o a cel. My spark plugs are brand new and i borrowed a friends working distributor. It is very annoying. Any ideas??

A good way to check if it is misfiring, or a cylinder is not functioning.

When the car is running, yank out a spark plug from the valve cover, and if the engine tremendously runs worse whiles it out, that cylinder is fine.

If you do remove one, and it doesn't change the way the engine runs, thats your bad cylinder.

Good luck

My car does the SAME thing man. I throw 71-74 though, one for each cylinder. Car runs absolutely perfect though. I have no idea what could be causing it except the coil or the ignitor. The light will blink at me when I am cruising at part throttle. If I blip the throttle or let off real quick it stops blinking. Wierd.

Yup. At first i was getting cel 71-74, then only 72 & 74, now only 74. When i had 71-74, at a stop CEL would flash also, but when accerlating it would stop. I tried using my friends working disributor and still nothing.

Sounds like you are having the same problem I was having. I would suggest you do a compression test.

I had a valve that had small piece missing. The car felt OK, but obviously it wasn't

i checked compression already and it came out 190-195 across the board. Thanks for all your replies! Hopefully we can tackle this and solve all three of our problems

Check out ur injectors, they might be ready to die. I was getting a code on my teg after cruising on the highway, and only on the highway. After I turned my car off and on, the CEL went away. Then my injector died on me.

I swapped around the injectors and i still get the misfire in the same cylinder (#4).

I dont know what else it can be. ..

This is all that i have done..
-New plugs
-New wires
-Swapped for my friends working distributor
-Swapped for my friends working obd2 p72
-Swapped the injectors around
-New fuel filter

Compression test came out good too..

Anything else?

Thanks for replying

bump this thread back to life....

I'm getting the same prob...help this man out!!! i have swapped all of the above that he has with working parts from a friend...still have a cel flashing 73 and 74 randomly between the 2 numbers (not 73, 74, 73, 74... but like 73, 74, 74, 73, 74, 73, 73).

Compression is good. Gas mileage is still an average of 27 - 33 which would imply a healthy engine.

bOOsted4dr, if you have fixed your problem, please share.

i had this same problem on my teg too. except it just showed code 74. every once in a while it would go away. after i sold everything and returned everything to stock, the light went away. maybe it had something to do with fuel and the afc hack. going neptune this time around. i hope i dont get the same code. good luck

Just have it tuned right at the local Honda/Acura specialist. They would look more into depth and also let you know what's wrong with your ****... BUT if you feel like they're tryna get more out of you... think of it as a offer for drugs... JUST SAY NO!

my car had the same problem a while back...the ecu counts misfires over a certain amount of time. It allows a few and that is all. If you are lean, or rich, or have a weak ignition and get too many, then it will trip the code. If it is enough to damage the cat then it will put you in limp mode(no power, no vtec).

Here is what my problem was: I had a weak factory coil. It was replaced with a Jacobs coil, exciter box and MSD cap, rotor, and wires. Problem gone even with boost. THere are checks you can do to see if the coil is out of limits. I do not have my manuals with me or I would give you the values. If the resistance values are even slightly off then replace the unit.

I personally would not use a factory coil if yours goes out. I would get an aftermarket set-up. They just run better and the power increases are noticable especially with boost. I have posted this before and got flamed for it but I really do not care. There is a reason professional race teams use aftermarket ignition systems instead of the oem one made to power your mom's car. Hope this helps.

I never really fixed the problem. I asked my tuner about it and he said and slight trip and the ecu will a misfire with the obd2 ecu.

I eventually installed the turbo kit and ran an obd1 ecu/conversion harness with neptune and everything checked ok. And with the obd1 ecu, theres no CEL.

I dont know how you would get rid of the cel. Hopefully someone here knows how

My car had a random misfire CEL 74 for a while too. There were no signs of misfire though and the car ran like a champ in city and race driving. I have no clue why it came on in the first place, but it disappeared after several unpluggings of the negative terminal. Now there's no ECU codes save for when I burn a sensor (usually O2 or IAT) and I blame those on the damn Houston weather and rain ******* things up.
