why so much turbo stuff an no nitrous?
ive been checking out this sit for a lil while now..and everybody's always talkin bout turbo's. i know there arent many blower app's out there for imports, so thats no prob..
but what about nitrous?
if a turbo's gonna add 100 hp or so.. why not go ahead and just add juice? a whole lot cheaper..not as hard on the engine because its not on all the time(though while its on its just as hard).. and unlike the one that i have on my truck, alot of the import ones are exectronically controlled so you get a precise amount of n20 and if you lose spark or the fuel pressure drops and it starts to detonate, the computer automatically shuts off the nitrous.
and just liek w/a turbo, you have to have the timing right, right type of spark plug, good fuel pressure, good ignition system, higher octane fuel and not be a retard and abuse it.
thoughts on this anyone?
and im aware of the disadvantages.. you have to have the bottle refilled, doesnt last a really long time..at $45 a pop for a 15 lb bottle (least that what it costs for me) it can get expensive in the long run. and since its not on all the time, its not really practical to play with like on the interstate or around town, though obviously you can.
i just havnt seen many questions on this and many pple going this route. im not knocking pple who want a turbo or have a turbo, just a nitrous guy wondering why so few seem to be going w/nitrous.
oh, and PLEASE dont say "NOS". its nitrous, call it nitrous. NOS is a nitrous kit manf.

Most people would rather drop $3-$5K on a turbo kit and tuning on stock motors rather than $700 for around the same amount of power. I think most people see this "100hp for $3k" and don't give a whole lot of thought to it, they say they do but I guarantee 80% of them don't. I'm not against turbocharging but it's everywhere you look nowadays. In every magazine, everyone wants to do it, sure it's cheap and relatively safe HP but to what point? I think it's easier for me to let off the gas and flip a switch than to think I can just up the power w/ the push of a button. Atleast nitrous isn't constant abuse to your motor unless you're some idiot that uses it all the time.
I have nitrous, I love it. Other than being strictly N/A its the only other power adder I'd ever put on a car that didn't already have a turbo or SC.

A lot of engines arent strong enough to handle a 100 hp shot of nitrous (at least more than once) and need to be built properly to handle it, while they can handle boost more efficiently. User error with nitrous is also much more likely, which accounts for all nitrous problems. Too much power, lines not purged, shot too low or too high, etc.
ya, ive notced that alot of honda engines cant handled a 100 shot of nitrous, but can easily handle 100 HP+ with the right turbo setup.
another reason i prefer turbo is the safety. Nitrous is pretty dangerous. you have the line running down under the car or through the car, you have a huge tank in the trunk, all of which can blow if the temperature isnt maintainted properly, or if you get in an accident and the tank gets ruptured.
Turbo setups are MUCH easier to control. Once you get everything tuned, all you need is a nice boost controller and you can control how much boost you wanna provide the engine, and therefore you can easily control how much stress you are putting on it. With a nitrous kit you have to change out the jets each time you want to change something. And there arent that many options with jets, its liek 50, 75, 100. With a turbocharger setup you can have any number inbetween those, anywhee below, and anywhere beyond
Dont get me wrong, I think nitrous is a great way to go if you are into it, my friend had nitrous on his car for almost a year with 55/75 shots and he had NO problems and he sprayed alot. But I think a turbocharger setup is a better way to go, mainly for flexability reasons and just overall control.

true, you do have more options as to how much power you want by boost controllers and whatnot, but about the same thing can be accomplished with a nitrous controller. you can control how big the shot is, how long it takes to fully engage, things of that nature. it just tacks on another $250 or so to the overall price.
but i do see your point on the power.
as far as it being more dangerous.. yeah, if you get in an accident, you dont want the bottle to rupture and fly around the car, but its not going to burst into flames or anything..and if you tuck the line, shoudlnt be a prob.. but i see that point also.
however, i dont quite understand how 100 hp shot of nitrous is any diff at all than 100 hp gained w/ a turbo. 100 hp is 100 hp,regardless of how you get it.
only diff is the 100 hp of nitrous is there RIGHT NOW, not a few seconds down the road. if you mean that the sudden burst of power is what screws up the engine opposed to the turbo gradually bringing on the power.. i can understand that. but not that nitrous is just harder on the engine..hp is hp.
thanks for the opinions, but need more more more. im curious as to what diff pple say.. BUT i dont want to turn this into an argument on which is better, because advocates on both sides can come up with pros and cons because it all ends up being personal preference.

I like both... I ran nitrous for more than a year and had very good luck with it. Ran only a 50-75 shot with a step cooler copper ngks and 93 octane, ran great for me.
I would have been running more by now (wanted to move to a 100 shot dp in fact) but at the time would have had to buy a new direct port kit to replace the single fogger, nitrous controller, purge, heater, and dyno time to check the a/f... adding it all up I would have been almost halfway to a turbo kit and no more 35-40 dollar bottle refills.
So given the money I was going to spend already and whatnot, I just kinda decided to go with the putting together a turbo setup... but the bottle is not lost on me (we put the kit on another car in the family
).

i ran nitrous for over 2 yrs. ran a 75 nx wet shot and slowly accumulated a **** load of nitrous accessories i.e remote bottle opener, bottle warmer, nitrous filter, msd switch, in cabin nitrous guage, purge etc.. it was a blast, but its time to move on to bigger and better things. i want that "sprayed" feeling to be constant and not have to bother with refills.
at the time, i ran nitrous cause i wasnt in the financial position to put down $1500-2000 down at once for a decent turbo setup and didnt want to wait to save up. now im slowly peicing a turbo setup together but first i gotta sell all my nitrous stuff though. check the sig...

ricers killed the whole purge thing
used to be badass before ppl started getting nitrous JUST for the purge not even hookin it up to their engine and throwing them on riced out piles of ****

the whole fake BOV **** they have on ebay is even worse.
haha i purged onto my intake manifold, lowering the IM temp never hurts.
i actually did this cuz whenever i got pulled over id close the valve w/ my remote bottle opener, purge inside the engine bay so cop doesnt see, and make sure my nitrous guage was at 0psi so i wouldnt get hassled.
i think im actually gonna go w/ a 1g dsm bov, dont want it too loud, im pretty sure my open dump tube will sound lound enough.

i did forget about the way a turbo sounds...that is definetly an advantage there..and the blow off valve.. very cool
but the purge is badass too. and i think its horrid that their are actually people out there who would buy a pure kit and a bottle...and not actually have nitrous. LOSERS!!!!
OMG, what the hell do you do when someone wants to race?? keep purging at them untill yoru bottle runs out then say you cant race cause you dont have anymore nitrous??? or do you just run away...or since you dont have anything and your car is slow as crap sinc eyou dont have nitrous.. you cannt run either.. <shakes head> sadness.
though...that idea about shooting the purge on the intake.....i had never thought about that.....i think thats a very good idea! may not help alot, but what can it hurt?
thanks for the opinions guys!
