Default Motor good or no good?

Does anyone know how to tell if a motor is good or no good with it out of a car? My friend has a d16z6 that he got for free from someone that used to shoot it with n20 and I'm thinking about buying a 91 civic and putting it in for a daily driver. I just want to make sure that this motor isn't gonna die on me as soon as I start driving it back and forth to work.
