Default Running rich black smoke.

I threw a code 43 suel system supply on my 93 cx hatch. I checked the voltage on the o2 and it was dead so I replaced it. The car runs better now and the cel went out, but when I start in first gear from a stop a fair ammount of black smoke comes out. It only happens in first gear and not once the car is underway. I know black smoke means running rich but why would it only happen in first after I fixed the o2?

I did a compression check a few moths ago and it came back good. That means my rings should be ok.

No it's pretty much stock intake, header, exhaust, with about 120,000 miles.

pull your plugs and take a look, your cat might also be shot, but if the 02 sensor was dead and you pulled it what did it look like? also check your fuel pressure regulator or at least fuel pressure make sure you are getting the right amount, possible bad seals on your injectors??? lots of options.

I forgot to mention I have a test pipe also. The bad o2 was really black. The plugs looked ok.

Have you considered installing a catalytic converter if you are concerned about the smog coming out?
Is your timing ok?
Did you seafoam it already?

The timing is good. I don't want a cat, but that isn't the problem because I haven't had a cat in a while and it just started smoking a while ago. The way I figure is by averaging 38mpg compared to 12mpg for an suv I'm really not polluting that much. Plus MN has no emmisions testing.

are you sure your o2 wire is 1 or 4 wire? I think you have to wire it to a 4 wire plug....
