SOHC Vtec engines.... how many are there?
I always thought there was only one, being the D15b. Then I remember the D16z6, here: http://tech.hybridgarage.com/tech/specs.htm. Whats the deal? The D15b was only available in Japan, correct? Are these the same engines, are my sources incorrect?
Also, a friend of mine is claiming that he has a 95 Civic EX motor (so I'm guessing D16z6) using a B16 ecu. He says the car runs perfectly, and that everyone who does SOHC Vtec buildups use the B16 ECU and it works fine. I said bullshit, your timing/fuel maps would be fucked, vtec crossover would be fucked, the car might run but would run like ***. He says its not the case, and that the motor redlines at 8 grand, and vtec crosses over at 4700rpm. I know most of the stuff he is saying is bullshit, but can anyone provide me some solid proof? I'm just going on what I think should be happening.

He says its from a b16, but from the sound of it, I doubt dude even knows ECU codes. Sounds like a typical ricer to me, and I want technical info to shut him up good.
Ah well its not for me, I have a friend saying that he has a d16z6 (I'm guessing) with a b16 ecu in it. Whether or not he has it chipped I don't know, as it would make more sense just to get a proper d-series ecu.

dont forget the underdog motor! ZC! zc's came in dohc non vtec, sohc non-vtec, and sohc vtec obd-1. all vtec ecus are compatible, but might not best suit the engine it is controlling. it is possible to chip them with different maps. for instance i have non vtec dohc ZC with a non vtec 89 integra ecu. it has more agressive fuel and timing maps than the stock crx si ecu and a higher rev limit. you would have to dyno to be sure but im guessing that the B16 ecu gives a bit more umph than any D-series. just my .02
b16 maps are a total misfit for almost any sohc setup...there is a slim margin of moderately built sohc where it would be 'ok'.
the most common sohc vtecs are-
d16z6
d15b vtec
sohc zc vtec
d16y8
and a miriad of economy-minded d15 vtecs
There are strange variants of the assorted engines, like d16z2, d16z9, etc, but they are few are far between so who cares.
