Default Compression test w/ broken timing belt??

Hey all... spring is here & I'm starting to work on my car. My question is, can I do a compression test with a snapped timing belt, or do I have to put a new one on to test?

I don't want to put everything back together just to find out if one of my valves is bent, then have to rip everything apart again. Any advice or help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

everything has to be in time to measure the compression of each cylinder, so yes you need a timing belt on it.

Is there any way I can test for bent valves before I put the new timing belt on?

You could carefully set the crank so that the piston you're testing is in the middle of the cylinder, and all 4 valves over that cylinder are closed. Then using a leakdown tester, you fill the cylinder with compressed air and see how much leaks out. If it leaks out quickly you have bent valves more likely (double check to make sure all valves are closed). If it leaks out very slowly (some will leak out no matter what) then that one is probably okay.

To get the pistons and camshafts in the right place for each cylinder, you'll probably need to turn each a little at a time so that the pistons don't touch any of the valves.
