Default Failed Smog check at State REF.. PLEASE HELP!!

okay first off, i have a civic with a gsr motor, all stock with skunk2 manifold, running on a b16 vtec ecu..

- now i recently just failed my smog check at the ref center.. all my gases are perfect except for HC's.. i faild my HC level by 10 at 2500rpm ( HC were 52).

- i plugged my car onto a scanner and at idle my engine load is 30.. is that normal?

- my short term fuel trim is at -25 at idle and my long term is at -8..

- i recently got a CEL and the scanner shoes p0172 too rich in bank1

any help will be appreciated.. thanks!

No - he's running rich. Thats why all the fuel trim adjustements are negative - the O2 is saying "Hey ECU, things are rich" to which the ECU responds "Well let me scale back the fuel by decreasing the fuel trim values".

HC's are unburnt fuel - so yes, increasing your timing should help a little. Do you know where your timing is at currently?

Do you have a VAFC or any other fuel enrichement device?

Do you have an adjustable FPR? If yes, whats your fuel pressure at?

yes this is a usdm motor.. my timing is set exactly to specs.. should i advance it a little? i can advance the timing 2 degrees and still pass the smog rite? as long as its -/+ 2 degrees? and no i do not have a FPR.. using stock fuel pressure regulator.. thanks for the help guys..

are you already BAR'd?

did the ref already do a visual inspection and pass your ecu? usually they're stingy about having the right ecu matched to the right motor... they look at a non compliant ecu and it's an automatic fail whether or not you pass the sniffer

no i did not get my bar sticker yet... i the ref passed the visual and everything.. only problem was that i failed my tailpipe emmissions.. 10ppm over the limit at 2500 RPM..

UPDATE : i just installed a fuel gauge on my car and the fuel pressure is 42 with vacuum and 50 without vacuum so that is good.. i checked my component monitoring on the scanner and the evap system is incomplete.. would an evap defect make me run this rich? im leaning toward the evap or my primary o2... im using my stock civic primary o2 on my gsr motor.. any difference?? also would using a b16 vtec on my gsr cause any problem that im having of running rich? Thanks guys!!

off the top of my head, check coolant temp sensor, o2, how old is your cat?, spark plugs, map sensor. post your reading for the other gases

all Skunk2 b-series intake manifolds are CARB exempt

it's the d- and h-series manifolds that are still pending

update: actual smog check results at the ref station...

15 mph - RPM @ 1983 - co2% 15.2 / HC 45ppm (60 max) / Co% .05 / NoX 6ppm
25 mph - RPM @ 2250 - co2% 15.2 / HC 54ppm (43 max) / Co% .04 / NoX 7ppm FAILED

today i did i two speed idle test (TSI) : these were my results

idle - RPM @ 714 - co2% 14 / o2% .1 / HC 298ppm (100 max) / CO% .87 FAILED
2500 RPM - co2% 14.56 / o2% .0 / HC 25ppm (130 max) / CO% .28 PASS

- So have a very rich condition at idle.. very abnormal.. what could cause this?

So far i have done a valve adjustment, new fuel filter, Installed Fuel Pressure Gauge which reads 42PSI, new spark plugs gapped to specs. cat is 2000 stock si cat.. timing is at 16 degrees BTDC... PLEASE HELP.. THANKS

Do you have a VAFC or anything like it?

How many miles on the present O2 sensor?
