timing mark on crankpulley
so i thought that i was supposed to line up the mark that is by itself. Now there are 4 marks total on the pulley. 3 together side by side and one by itself. but i just read on here

that i am supposed to line up the middle mark of the three together? which one is it!

oh ****.....i hope i didnt do any damage to the valves....because i turned the motor over to check for compression....hope i dont got any bent valves....i mean i can still turn it by hand without to much trouble...argh....
a timing light should hit the center mark with the engine running. if you're doing a timing belt use the mark on the block or the tdc mark on the crank pulley, and the marks on the cam gear.
my cam is lined up on top.. both the side marks are lined up to the head...while the word "up" is up...
on the crank pully i lined up the single line on the pulley with the timing belt cover. i thought i wasnt supposed to use the three lines....
oh yea this is a z6 head on a a6

so you are setting your timing. you should be good. once you get it all back together put a timing light on it and when it flashes, your sight on the cover should line up within the three timing marks. these represent 16 degrees before tdc +/- 2 degrees. this is when your plug should, fire right before the piston reaches it's highest point of compression. also when you get the lone mark lined up, look at your rotor in the dist.. it should be pointing at the #1 spark plug position.

I got confused reading this how-to also when i was doing mine. He makes it sound like you should line up the crank pulley with the middle timing mark when putting the t-belt on. I lined it up with the TDC mark just because i assumed it's where it should be. That is correct right?

also, where should the 2 marks on the cam gear be aligned with on the y8 head? The head itself or the cover? Just making sure everything is right before i get my car back out (did the swap over winter break, i only drive the car summers really).
ok im still confused..... i know i lined up the head right...and yes the rotor is pointing at cylinder 1.
now as i am looking down on the sights on the timing belt cover i should see just the lone mark? or the middle of the three marks? argh so confused!
i should line it up to that one single line to the timing belt cover sights....but when i shine the timing light on it it should lineup to the middle of the three lines?

the three marks together are only used when setting exact timing with a timing light. as for the y8 marks you might ask or search in the eg forum. someone in here knows i'm sure so you might ask in here also. i know on the z6 you line up with the 2 arrows on the inside timing cover marked po8. these are basically level with the head's mating surface.

just the lone mark. when you got it running then the three marks are what you wan to see in the sight when the light flashes.
