Hey guys, i have a 99 prelude 5spd base and i noticed that if im moving any more than a couple mph it grinds when i try to shift it into first. If i double clutch and revmatch it it will shift in just fine. The car has almost 100k mi on it. if anyone has any idea what it might be id be really greatful. I was thinking possibly a bad pressure plate or worn first gear syncro if it even has one.

I agree but it seems as though most other cars including my gsr would shift to first while ur still rolling to a stop without the double ckutch.
its a pain to shift into first in almost all imports if your going any faster than 2 or 3 mph.... just how it is man...
Also, i dont think that first gear has a syncro... not really a need for one since you dont drive your car for more than a couple of seconds in first gear for the most part

Outside of a severe mechanical failure, most grinding issues can be solved with a gear oil change and clutch bleeding.
Are you downshifting into 1st? If you are, why not just rev match in 2nd?

I thought that it was only the fourth gens that didnt have a 1st gear synchro.

ive also noticed that from a stop the car is hard to get into first until the clutch has been pressed for a few seconds....suggesting throwout bearing but im not sure....thats just my guess i have no idea really
that is the throwout bearing. Do you have to start to almost release the clutch before it will go into first? My car did that for about a month, i changed the tranny fluid and bled the clutch... still a pain in the *** to get it into first so i took it to my shop... T/O bearing was the problem with 1st.
how the hell can u downshift into 1st?? there is a gear lock..i cant get in there unless im going like 1-2 mph..i just hit the lock..
its the samething with reverse.

You shift to first by double clutching and rev matching your transmission. What a syncro does is it matches the speed of your transmission to the speed of your drive wheels. Because first does not have a syncro you need to do this matching yourself. To double clutch from second to first shift from second into neutral (clutch in, shift to neutral, clutch out) blip the throttle to get the transmission spinning at the same speed as the engine woudl be revving at if you were going that speed in first, then shift to first and it should go right in. It may sound complicating but after you get the hang of it you will do it without thinking and it makes driving those tight switchbacks alot faster. Good luck
