Default HELP! Gear that go GRUNCH

hey guysm, I recently bought a Del sol...(EDM d16a9 5spd)

here's the dealy...

when i'm revving hard and shifting fast (i.e. racing)

all gear transitions are smooth and percise, EXCEPT for 3rd...

example... rev to 6g's shift to second smooth and quick... and when i go from 2nd to 3rd. if the revs are in the 5k+ range with the clutch Fully depressed and I shift regardless of slamming it from 2 to 3 or in a slow 2 to N to 3 motion it still goes GRUNCH as if i'm changing gears without a clutch... yet still engages.... everytime i shift i feel like i'm gonna sheer the teeth off the gear deffinately not a healthy sound

when i'm city driving and shifting in like the 3k range the shift is fine regardless of speed of shift...

3 to 4 is fine and 4 to 5 is fine, as well as 4-3 (obviously a low rpm shift)

only an occurance between 2-3,

anyone have similar probs? is it my syncros? do i hafta strip apart the gear box??

please help.... TYIA

It's your synchros. They will go eventually, but Honda MTF may help for the time being. Second gear will go next.

Is it one of those:cheap in parts but crazy in labor jobs? (I really hope so)

would it be better to fix it now, or it really wont matter

Parts are relatively cheap (less than $200 for a complete bearing/synchro kit). Labor will be expensive, and rebuilding a tranny isn't something you just do with no prior knowledge of it. If you're going to replace one synchro, might as well do them all b/c you have to take it all apart anyways. Look for around $600-$800 total including parts for the rebuild.

If you keep grinding your gears, you're going to mess more things up (like the gears themselves), and you'll be out even more money. Lay off the hard shifts for a while, and dont' force it into gear. Wait for the worn synchro to do its job, just a little bit slower.

Yeah the parts aren't going to cosy you much but the labor will be a killer. It should cost you about 350 to 450 plus the parts since the job is similar to a clutch job except the trany now needs to be cracked open to do the synchro repair. If you decide to do the job you might want to consider putting in a new clutch cuz it won't cost you any more since the trany is going to be out anyway.
