Default Shifter problems (Automatic)

Hello everybody. I recently purchased a 1990 4 dr. LX. The car came without an ECU. I purchased a pm5 for it, but I wasnt sure if it was for a manual or auto. I hooked it up, car runs and shifts fine, except that it is locked in Park. I have to use the key in the shift unlock socket to select gears. Do you think it could be the wrong ecu, or something unplugged???? Thanks in advance guys

Oh, BTW, The parking brakes come on when the brake pedal is pressed, and it illuminates on the dash.

Pull the center consol off by the shifter, and look at all the plugs.

if u cant find problem... its not to hard to byepass the lockout system... just remove the console and u can plainly see what locks it in park when u push key in slot.....

u have a manual ECU for a auto. it will run the car fine but 2 things will not work.

#1 is the locked in park. to fix easaly, on the lockup control box under the driver seat near the front center, theres a white\red wire. that goes to the ecu. i dont know if u ground it (most likly) or suplly 12 to get the "when brake depresed u can shift out of park".

#2 is the AT lock-up sol. or "5th gear" as i have heard it called. i have a light hooked up to mine and can tell u this: it only works >25 MPH, only when the trany is in 3rd or 4th gear, and only comes on if ur on the gas; I.E. if u take ur foot off on the highway it will go off, u need to apply some presure to keep it locked.

if it flashed one time and not again thats normal. if it repeated one flash bout once every second then u got a code 1 or O2 sensor.

Well, I fixed the problem guys. It was a manual ECU. Went to the Wrecking Yard today and picked up an auto one. BUT, now its throwing a code 12, I guess its the battery. Gonna pick up a new one tomorrow. Thanks again fellas!!!
