Default Hot start problem.

I have a 1989 Civic DX Hatchback. I have had it for a couple of months and it has treated me perfect since I got it. About 2 weeks ago, maybe 3, can't remember I was trying to start it after I just stopped off at a convenience store and it wouldn't start. I had to wait a couple of minutes before it would start. So it has done this a couple times and I have determined it won't do a hot start. For some reason the motor has to have been off for a time period before it will start again. I can't figure out what this time period is as it seems to change. It turns over, but it just won't start. I have checked the plugs, they are clean, and the distributer cap is in good condition. I asked my autos teacher about it and he said he would really need to look at it to figure out the problem. So I was wondering if any of you have had any experience with this problem and what it could be. Thanks a bunch.

So the fuel pump just overheats? How much would a decent fuel pump cost on my car? If I don't fix it right away I assuem it will just stop working?

no its just going out like parts that are 15 years old do. or check your main fuse relay. i was just talkin about my past expeirience and the fuel pump will probably be like 30 bucks.

As others mentioned, this sounds like a main relay problem.

When my car had this problem,
I thought it was the fuel pump so I replaced it
with a brand new one..$$$ expensive it was...

So then it did the same thing as before the first time I drove it...

I then replaced the main relay and have not had a problem since.
That was over four years ago..

I hope I don't sound like an idiot for asking this... But in my experience with cars, I have never needed to work on a main fuse relay? What is it and where is it at? Is it just something that is ran to the fuse box or whatever? Also... Now that I know what the problem is I would also like to know why. That way I can better understand the problem. I think it is better to fix something, and know what and why you are fixing it, instead of just doing it. So yeah. Thanks for the help.

FYI: 99% of the time the relay is the problem. The next most common thing is the distributor, then you can go down the laundry list of other possibilities. I re-soldered my connections in the relay but still was having the problem (although less often) so I just got a new one at the dealership. Less than $50 shipped to me. I would just drop the money for the new one.

if you get to replacing the fuel pump, get a 255lph walboro, bbk.etc and get something in there that will support the mods that you will want to do. i got mine for $70 brand new installation-free courtesy of myself. just do it!
