Default Over heating in cold MINNESOTA????

I just put a new motor in my car after the timing belt snapped in my old motor. The "new motor has about 275,000 miles on it. Yeah, you heard me right. The head gasket was done about 3,000 ago, and we did the water pump and timing belt to. Well the other day I was driving on the highway and I noticed it started getting hotter. Then I would coast and it would cool down. Ideling it runs at normal temp. REMEMBER, it's 25 degrees here. It was also running like ****. I put a new PCV valve in there and it took care of that, but it still likes to creep in temp. It also smokes All the time. I wouldn't call it smoke, it is actually like steam but it definetly isn't coolant. It smells almost rich like gas. Can anybody help

check your coolant for oil. coolant in your old. check your timing you might be running rich. clean your IACV .

your radiator is probably clogged up or your thermostat is stuck almost closed.
does your fan work on time

I did the thermostat and a coolant flush. It was running fine for about 15 mins, then it started to do it again. It actually started running shitty, and blown hella smoke. So I am doing the head gasket again. Last time a friend of mine did it before he gave me the motor, so I don't know what he did.

Why would you buy a new motor that has 275k miles on it...even if it had a new timing belt and **** 3k miles ago...

you can find sohc long blocks for pretty cheap and in decent condition

does the heater go cold when the engine starts to climb in temp?

do a compression test and coolant system pressure test before you just randomly pull the head off. that'll tell you if its leaking anywhere.

It was the headgasket. It leaked in between the 2 nd and 3rd cylinder.

BTW I got the motor for free from a friend, I didn't buy it.
thanks for all the input!

Damn, I wish I knew about those a6's a 1-1/2 years ago. I tried searching for a while, then gave up. My CRX has been dead for a year because I'm too lazy to swap the head gasket again. I'm going to do it soon anyway, but if that doesn't pan out, I'll buy a motor off of you if you'll ship it. You got trannies with them too? Please PM a price to me.

My online rep currently isn't the greatest because I have a few things to finish making (manifolds for 2 turbo kits and then to ship them) so I'm not going to do any online business until those are taken care off. After that, I will let you know. Only reason why I even posted for this guy is becuase he is a regional and all business would be taken care of in person. And yes, I have plenty of other vouches for other items but I dont think it'd be best to do anymore stuff until those first things are taken care of.

Is the coolant topped off? I had a similar problem after doing a swap when it was cold here. After filling up the coolant I forgot to let the motor pull it through and I was just low enough that it would get above halfway through and then start going down - once it was flowing again.

Just a thought. That or the thermostat.
