if its smoking then i would say headgasket is a good guess.

if its not and its just overheating, start simple

radiator cap, thermostat.

did you replace your water pump when you did your timing belt? you should have if not (its just a general good idea)

could you elaborate on how installing the timing belt incorrectly would cause the car to over heat. I do however agree that the water pump should have been replaced with the timing belt.

what color is the smoke? White smoke is generally coolant, which would mean head gasket, silver or black is oil.

i've never knew black smoke was oil, i thought it was gas when running rich.

since you had no coolant, chances are there is air in your system and you need to get it out. but i would continue to look for leaks since you did come up short on coolant. check your oil dipstick, how does it look? texture wise, does it look milky(not like the color of milk).

according to what you said about your plugs it doesn't seem like a head gasket. the oil should be a indication as well.

does your reserve boil over? if you try to burp the air of your coolant and it never seems to stop, your head gasket is gone. this happens when you leak compression into your coolant passages. its a scary way to blow your head gasket because usually this happens after your temp sender and you'd never know it was overheating until it started pouring sweet smelling smoke from your reserve. i hate that smell.
