Default SUSPENSION

Hey guys, I dont know a good deal about suspension. I did a search but I wanted someone to explain. Im getting Apex springs, koni yellows and ITR rear sway bar with the bsq kit. I saw a lot of posts with their set up including rear upper and lower tie bar and front upper and lower tie bar.

What are tie bars and what do they look like and what benefits??

TIA

They go in between the shock towers.. they improve chassis rigidity.

Here are some pictures of my 2001 GS-R with a U.S. Type-R Front Strut Bar...

Here are some pictures of my 2001 GS-R with the optional Japanese Type-R Rear Strut Bar...

Again, these bars allow for greater rigidity throughout the chasis.

I don't remember off hand how much the bar was, but it was $175+ for sure. I got it from Mike over at ipsracing.com. Prices can fluctuate, so you just have to ask him. You can e-mail, call, or Instant Message him...https://honda-tech.com/zerouser?cmd=viewprofile&id=4039. He goes by the name TypeRmsm on this board.

For street suspension, the rear strut tower bar (aka upper tie bar) and lower tie bar are not really important. When you get to higher spring rates than are comfortable for the street, the chassis starts becoming "soft" relative to the stiffer spring rates, and chassis flex starts becoming more of an issue.

I've read people's testimonials about how much improvement they found when they put their tower bars in, and honestly I believe it to be mostly placebo effect.

The GS-R already has a front strut tower bar (due to the extra mass of the engine up fron, the reinforcement makes more of a difference there). If you bought a swaybar/tiebar combo for the back, I'd say great.. but if you bought the ITR/BSQ out back, I wouldn't worry about any more bars.

If you want them, like the look of them, or whatever, go for it. But for street application, the springs, shocks and sway bar are going to dominate the car's behavior. (and I believe you'll be happy with it)

They certainly don't hurt anything except maybe trunk usability, a tiny bit of ground or muffler clearance, and your wallet.

The rear tie bar will control flex between the points the lower control arms connect to the frame. The comptech tie bar also prevents tear out with a beefier sway bar.The attached link has some good pics.

Cramerox, when you purchase the kit, it comes with a template and instructions to cut out the holes in the strut covers. It also comes with the precut rubber pieces to go over and around the rough edge that has been cut. I used a circle template for my design, and a Jigsaw with a special metal blade designed to cut plastic. If you would like more detail, or information, just drop me a line and I will be more than happy to help out.
