gauge metal and adjusting settings......how do yo uknow
okay i havent been to school or anything so i only know from hands on , i havent been welding but about a year but i have always wanted to know, from all the big dawg welders in here.
how do you know what your settings need to be on a mig welder when changing from metal to metal?
i have just always used a little trial and error method and have some settings saved to memory but how do yo know what gas psi to use, wire feed, and heat range.
i am going to school in the fall to actually learn how to weld but i was just wondering this before i got there.
thanks

That is the right answer. Unless you know for sure what amperage and feed to use you should test on a piece of scrap first.
Settings vary for a bunch of different reasons: machine, material (thickness and type), gun angle and direction of travel, etc. There is no 'one size fits all' setting for mig.

A lot of small mig welding machines have basic settings listed on the inside panel of the machine where the wire feed is located. I know the Miller I have has the specs for different gauges located there.
