Default How does a thermostat help the performance of a car?

Just that, I mean how can a lower temperature thermostat help a car? I guess I'm not real sure what they do exactly

It helps your engine run cooler... cooler = more efficient = more power... more or less it will help your stock engine last longer and will help cool your mod'ed engine to avoid overheating problems.

I thought engines are more efficent when they run hotter, not so hot that the head gets warped.

I know that cooler air better for combustion because its more dense.

Usually you only put a lower temp thermo in if you live in tropical climates.

Correct me if I'm wrong.

I live in the tundra right now but i have a cooler temp thermostat.

It's just a little peace of mind in summer along with good life blood (Mobil 1) and clean coolant (I flush mine yearly).

The thermostat only flows the coolant to the radiator sooner...it doesn't increase any cooling for that matter. If your car overheats after ie: 10 minutes of constant redlining, a low-temp thermostat is not going to do anything. But if your car has sufficient cooling, it's good to keep the engine running a bit cooler so the engine will be more responsive.

This information about the Mugen thermostat was taken from King Motorsports website ( http://www.kingmotorsports.com/produ...ra/engine.html )

This thermostat has the operating temperature set lower than normal. It prevents engine power loss by minimizing rapid water-temperature rises under harsh conditions such as during circuit driving. The use of a flow-control-type valve prevents hunting, thereby achieving rapid stabilization of the water temperature (the engine warms up within a short period).

Operating temperature: 68°C (STD.: 76~80°C)

Full-throttle acceleration temperature: 81°C (STD.: 90°C)
