best muffler for balance of low and high power?
this is mostly an experience topic. Just recently I bought header and hi-flow cat for my 95 accord. When i installed it, without consideration for leaks this is what I realized:
1. it stank
2. its noisy
3. I lost low-end power even with a small leak.
so I fixed it and now its awesome. It made me realize how important back pressure was for my non-vtec 4 banger.
I really wanted to install a new muffler for my car but here are the factors I want
1. slightly stock looking
2. will retain backpressure when needed, and release backpressure when needed
What Im trying to say is I want a muffler that has a slightly better flow than that of a stock muffler but not flow like a canister muffler. I am going to keep my stock catback piping to retain that backpressure. So with all this in mind does anyone know of a muffler that can do that? Im hoping that maybe someone with personal experience or leads, could offer me a solution? or do I have to live with the choice of low or high end power? cuz after all its not just about straight piping and hi-flow.

I wreckon you're best bet would be a mugen style twin loop, they're the best overall so far from my experience.
they give real good low..mid and highs, yet they stay quiet but when pushed they're really smooth.
They would be the perfect choice, or else any n/a muffler woulnd't be too bad, so long it's not a staright pipe design.

like stated above, try not to go for a straight through... you want anysounds at all? ive heard of people putting rsx mufflers, ive recenty put the is300 on mine, and some even go for the maximas look...
Apex'i came out with a new exhaust system a year or two ago with a baffle in it that would open/close depending on the pressure coming out...so it would keep low and high end power gains...you could look into that....
i doesnt even matter. gains are so minimal that you cant even feel it.
i dont even know how you felt the difference when you added high flow cat and header.
i cant even feel a 30 hp difference with my butt

not everyone is as jdm as j00
what size piping are you currently running?...honestly, the factory DX/LX piping isnt giving backpressure, its restricting air flow, which hurts more than decreased EGV "gains"

haha...yeah i know what youre talking about but I do have ways. where I live there are uphills, downhills, flats. when you drive your car a lot im sure even you know your car better than anyone else. I drive the same places all the time. after the mod if I feel that I gained something then I know I got something going on. Im not really looking for a 30hp boost, im just trying to get the best out of my car without putting a hole in my pocket. thanks for the comment though.
well im not looking for trouble so I dont mind a low tone but i dont want something super loud while im doing my daily driving. I wouldn't mind jdm...if it helps.
I still have my stock catback so that would be 2.25, right...hmm not sure. If what youre saying about the stock catback is true then it wouldn't matter what muffler I buy, it will still keep the backpressure I wanted, right? that means a flowmaster, or magnaflow or something like that would be fine, right?

apexi WS, greaddy SP, tanabe hyper medallion...all have the stock oval muffler look...all r relatively quiet during normal driving but becomes loud(not obnoxiously loud) when u hit the high RPMS....and all r suppose to give u gains in wut they call "usable RPMS" i use all my RPMS, so im assuming they mean mid range power? im personally going with the tanabe hyper, becuz the SP is to quiet for my taste and i heard the apexi WS is even quieter and more restrictive
I have the A'pex WS Cat-Back on my 96. Its very quiet under normal driving condtions. I wouldn't think its more restrictive bc the piping is a good amount larger, but you never know. It is louder(not screaming) after about 4500 RPM. I felt a little gain, but not a lot and it was mostly in the mid range. Fit and finish are also very good. Overall, I very happy with it and would recomend it to anyone.
