Default what grit for a hone?

a local machine shop is going to do the hone on my block and they usually use 280 grit but they mostly do v8's. is this the right grit to use or should it be done a little finer?

maybe high 300's-400 ..I know 180 is about a medium grit so it may be good @ 280 like they use...
