New engine and I'm burning through Cats!
I just did a engine change from a D15 to a D16z6. I've put in all new plugs, wires, cap/rotor, O2 sensor, 4-2-1 DC-s header, Skunk2 intake manifold, Iceman intake, clutch...bla bla. But I can't figure out why my car is going through so much fuel and burning up Cats in less than 2 weeks each. The muffler shop says it's problably because the used engine is running too rich or too lean...going through so much fuel I think it's rich. I only get about 200mpg, if I'm lucky. No internal work has been done buy me, but that's not saying that the last guy that owned the engine didn't do any. Has anyone even heard of a problem like this? Maybe my injectors are bad or the fuel regulator is sticking?
how do u know that your Cats are dead? emissions tests? i would check the fuel pump, fpr, and injectors to make sure they're operating within spec. what ecu are u running? running an AFC? if you're running that rich, you should be able to smell a strong gasoline odor from your exhaust
I have a stock p28 manual ecu, new fuel pump so I don't think that's it. No external air fuel controls, and I know I'm going through cats because I brought my car back to the muffler shop the fix the rattling in the exaust, thinking that it's loose header bolts under the car, and they handed me pieces of my Cat.
-I actually only went through one cat, but the muffler shop recomended that I don't install another till I get the car inspected and fixed...or else I've wasted another cat.

what brand of cat are you buying? running rich WILL NOT cause physical damage to your cat. running rich will cause the metal oxides in the cat to burn up, making your cat not work properly.

How would you test your fuel pressure regulator? Can you clean it? Actually is it cheep enough that I could probably just replace it and not worry if it worked or not?
I don't know what brand of Cat it was. All I know is that it was a 2" cat and it helped me pass emissions.

you need a fuel pressure gauge to check to see if your pressure is being regulated correctly.
if you're running rich, you should have a pretty potent fuel smell from your exhaust and soot on ur bumper/tail pipe

I only get 20 - 25 mpg on my d16y8. I still have yet to find out why. I don't drive with a heavy foot.... shifts around 3k-3,5k. Who knows.

I think you are going down the wrong path. Replace the fuel regulator if you feel the need but I will put money down that it doesn't solve your problem. Running rich, as stated before, will NOT cause the cat to shatter. Backfiring COULD cause the cat to shatter, but certainly not running rich. That, if anything, would cause the cat to melt.

not really.
I had a 10psi turbo setup on my d16 AND running the pig rich greddy blue box and I still got 340 miles per tank on highway trips.
290ish around town.
now, if I were running around gassing it all over the place revving the **** out of the engine I would get 200-240 per tank.
I think the guy just had a shitty cat to begin with, a lead foot, and a muffler guy trying to give him a line.
how many miles were on the car before the swap?? how long that cat been on there??
not really.

Sure it is. That's like 2000 miles to a tank.
