What not-so-obvious things cause an engine to run super rich?

Things like advanced/retarded timing, etc.? Still cant pass emissions and I am stumped.

Could be cause of faulty O2 sensor, EGR (if you have it), running any codes whatsoever, fuel pressure, octane rating etc.

bad spark plugs also make to run rich.

Fuel rails, lines, Fuel filter might even have a huge hole in it.

Leaky injector...

It's a little easier to guess (correctly) if you post your emission numbers.

----------------Limit--------Result
HC ppm--------97-----------312------Fail
CO %----------.54-----------5.54------Fail
NO ppm-------749---------697---------Pass

There they are. What do you all think?

check your fuel return line, spark plugs and wires. if you haven't replaced them in a while i would go ahead and do that and make sure the electrodes have the proper gap.

what octane are you running when you test?

also, if you have the original cat, you should take it to a local honda dealership and have them put on a new one. all emissions related component replacements are free for stock 96-97 civics. they will also change your cap, rotor, plugs and wires for free.

Stock cars, or stock components. My car isnt stock, its got a b16 with i/h/e. I've got the cap, rotor, wires and plugs in my garage, ready for install tommorrow, but if I cn get the car replaced for free, I am gonna jump on that tommorrow. Also, I tested it with 93 that time, but I waited till I am almost on empty this time, and I am gonna fill it halfway at least with 87 this time.

Also, how can I test my EGR to see if it is bad, if there is a way?

correct me if I'm wrong but I don't remember b16s having EGR, now I know the preludes have them but not any B-series engines. btw checked your vacuum lines lately? check for leaks in them. also possible problems: leaky injectors, foul spark plugs.

Hmm, well thats good. I am not familar with the EGR system, as you can tell, so I have no idea. The vacuums I checked all appear to be alright, but I am going to give them one more check tommorrow.
