Default Snycro going bad....need advice

When I drive around with ease, my 2nd gear is fine, but If I beat on it, it grinds and has a hard time going in, only 2nd gear though. I called Honda and they said they sell a syncronizer kit for $157, is that what I need? I have the factory civic manual to help me through it, but I"m not sure exactly what to expect, anyone out there that's done it before that could give me a heads up or a parts list?

That will fix it. You'll need to pull the tranny, dissasemble that gearset from the shaft and then put it all back together. Check (I think?) Bauley's Input Shaft Bearing replacement guide for most of what's involved.

If it's not too bad, you could always 'band-aid' it with Synchromesh FM fluid.

I have a mechanic friend (GM mechanic) who charges $40 hr, would you recommend me taking out the tranny myself, then paying him to do the gear crap so I don't screw it up, then I can put the tranny back in, or is it not that hard? I'm replacing my clutch too, so that's why I'm thinking about doing this now.

you just need time, alot of good tools that won't mess up the bolts, flashlight in case you work during the nights outside depending on your situation you may work in.
need a jack that will lift your car high enough for the tranny to come down, label stuff so it won't get mixed up or lost, more time.

hopefully you can learn that wrenching to get the tranny out is a good experience for you. Once you do it you may be able to help out another person next time.
go for it.
i have not done syncro but good luck.

Actually, I think getting the tranny out is the most labor intensive part of the process. If you can get it out, and you have the FSM, you should be fine. Just keep the parts lined up, and follow the diagrams.

I did this to my tranny but i used gears and syncros out of an 88-91 civic si to fix mine. It works great now but it was a pain in the *** to do and my mechanic friend had to help me. I would take out my own tranny but def. take it to a mechanic to have him fix the sycro. Its alittle overwhelming when you pull all those gears out. good luck
