if you still have your heat shield above and below the cat....im guessing that
mine was going nuts in that rpm range...we pried it off and everything went away

Semi- Your heat shield keeps news papers etc that sit under your car at a stop light from going up in flame, as well as some of the plastic pieces from melting on your car. But after market parts tend to remove the heat shields anyway, so, I'd say its probably safe, you just have the the 1 in 30000 chance of something igniting under your car.
Watch out for the Nawws blwoing up on you.
EDIT: If its coming from behind, you might wanna check the hatch. Mine was rattling real bad and it turned out to be my 3rd brake light housing had come loose, and was so bad even the vibration of idle made it rattle. So yeah, might wanna check that too.
