Default reliablility of ls/vtec

Im new to the import scene....i am lookin at a car that has a ls/vtec setup. the guy has put in a b18b block/gsr head. the head has been ported and polished, toda cams, edelbrock(sp) intake, etc. i have just heard that these setups eventually become unreliable. is this truth or myth? more info on this setup would be great. the motor is in a 96 hatch.
thank you

what is the reason for their ability to be unreliable?

The LSVTEC and CRVTEC get a bad rep because in most cases where they are considered "not reliable" the motor wasn't built properly. The nonVTEC block internals were never meant to see 8K RPM's all the time so of course they aren't going to last long if you rev them all day. If built right with the proper internals, there is no reason that one would be any less reliable than any stock Honda motor.

Of course, the real problem with buying a car with an LS-VTEC is not knowing whether the motor is properly built or not.

very true.

the only way i would buy it is if he had it done at a shop and they backed up their work.
