Default Just picked up a Del Sol

Hey im sorta new to the del sols and i was wondering my goals are high 13's daily driven, pump gas....how many people are running this with a b16 swap or would it be easier to do with a sohc turbo...right now its auto and the engine is beat so either what ill have to convert to stick and put in a new motor. but which will b easier to get where i want to get to ?

You might be able to pull a high 13 from just a gsr swap and bolt ons. People do it all the time in hatchies, but you have a little more weight.
My guess is you'll need about 180 -200 whp.
Some others are going to chime in here

If you have the money to spend, anything is possible. If you are on a budget, the SOHC w/turbo is the easiest route, as it is cheaper and quicker to swap these compnents into your Sol.

ya z6's are around that number. as for the kit, you could piece it together but not sure on reliability vs the standard kits which normally are tested and proven.

1500 for swap
3500 for turbo kit & tunning(could save some $$ with custom kit but is time consuming doing research and finding good deals on parts on ht classifieds and ebay)
safely 230 hp
or just spend 2500 on boosting your sohc but whats the fun in that, you still only have 1 cam

yes, ls/vtec is nice, but might be outta this dudes price range. you'll spend 5-600 just on the vtec head and machine work to make it fit not to mention the costs of larger cams if your going n/a and then replacing/upgrading the pistons/oil pump/water pump . Then lets discuss the prices of new ecu, installing hondata/uberdata, and then tunning. This is all added ontop of the price of the base ls swap that really needs a vtec tranny to even perform to it's highest potential. This dude still has to get everything to converted from auto to stick. I would personally replace the engine and sell it then buy a 5spd equipped sol unless you are attached to the car for sentimental reasons

stick with the SOHC turbo, easy and very cheap. there is a guy on http://www.turbod16.com that has over 400whp with a built d16z6 turbo.

if hes going to do that, he may as well find a b16 sol and just put a 'stock' turbo kit on it and call it a day.

yea i mean its really only a summer car i drive a teg the rest of the year....i wanted somthin quick and fun to drive doesnt need to b some 400 hp monster. all together id probably want to spend 3500 on the motor. I figure a sohc swap & converison to stick thatll run me around 5 or 6 hundred. i can peice together a dec turbo kit for prob 1500 and still have come cash for tunning maybe even forged internals. again im not lookin for insane numbers just enought to put me in the mid to high 13s

If your keeping that car, and are going to switch the motor and trans anyway, having $3500 and wanting something reliable, i would just do a straight gsr swap with the auto-manual conversion. Your going to need to buy del sol shiftlinkage either way. You'll be alot more reliable than a stock d series turbo. It just seems to fit right in with your needs/wants.

i've seen that as well, i think in honda tuner @ a year ago. Where they weld the turbo adapter flange directly on a stock exhaust manifold. It's not as nearly efficient as an equal length tube design mani but I'm sure it would work as effectively as some of the cheaper cast iron mani's on the market.

do a d16z6 turbo. that is what i would do if i could do it over again. i did my swap before i knew better and swapped in a b16 and i can't run any better than low 15's with i/e. the b16 went in no problem in the sol, (no mounts, cutting, etc.) just had to get the shift linkage lengthened. just build your motor before you put it in the car and DO RESEARCH before you buy anything. turbo's are cool, cause you can pretty easily add more power, yea you should get retuned after fuel/ boost changes, but that aint so bad.
