Temperature guage quit working (Pegs out at high Temperature)
I have a 1991 Honda Accord wagon. My temperature guage is wacked out. When I turn the key to on position it pegs out to max temp and stays that way until I turn my car off. This is even if I don't even start the car just turn it on. I have been trying to figure out what sensor is for the gauge. There appears to be 4 to choose from. Anyone konw if it is the single red wire sensor between the coolant engine sensor and the coolant fan sensor both of these have two wires. I don't know how the temp gauge funtions, does it have anyting to do with engine performance or is it just for the gauge reading? What could cause the gauge to max out like this? Anyone ever see this

Often the sender for the temperature gauge is in the head, near the upper radiator hose. It's a single-wire sensor, not any of the 2-wire sensors nearby.

#22 to the right of center?

I'm not really sure about that, but you could unplug it & see what your gauge does.
Normally, you test the gauge by unplugging that sensor & grounding it's wire. But the book warns you not to let the gauge get all the way to the top. If you do you can damage the gauge. Maybe that's already happened???

# 22 can be on the head or on the jacket where the thermostat is & your right a single wire the gauge is probable toast though if it 's at the top with just the key on
Thanks I found it. It was the single wire (red) sensor. When I unplug it the gauge needle goes down. Now I have to determine if its the gauge or sensor.
in the hanes book or the clinton book tells you how to test it comes under the fan or cooling system cause i just checked to see if my fans were working mine was loose fitting so i just tweked the plug but i was checking my fans not the gauge

'91 might not be the same as my cars, but a Helm book for your year would tell you how many ohms that sender is supposed to read at several temperatures.
