There is a 99% chance that the mounting holes on the cat have just rusted out, so it's rattling. Get a pair of vise grips and rip it out, you dont need it anyway. This is extremely common. I hope this helps. Later!
I have a DAC intake.
DC Sports 4-2-1 ceramic header (whatever.....)
Unknown cat-back pulled it from my EX.
If you really want to keep the HX, get an EX intake manifold (Type R of the D series). Get yourself a EX transmission (stronger and higher gearing). DON"T get an EX head. The cam specs are better on the HX. I am looking into re-sleeving the block to 79mm. Custom pistons and rods. And then after that port and polish the head and other things.
Susepension: Neuspeed Sport springs, stock shocks, APC rear strut bar (hey it was 40 bux). Wiating to go in. SI front sway, Type R rear sway.

I've had rattling cats on both my Civics. In my experience it's usually just the heat shield. the mounting holes rust out and it vibrates. Always finds it's favorite frequency at about idle to really embarass you at stoplights.
just remove the heat-shield. Keep the cat and don't gut it.
they're there for a reason.
