what is the cost for something like the top mount manifold and turbo exhaust housing. would you use stainless steel pipe if you were going to coat it though.

I could do the manifold for $75, and turbo housing for $40, i dont suggest doing the turbo housing however.

why not the exhaust side of the turbo? that thing got just as hot as the manifold.

I agree, that is why I build my manifolds out of mild steel, to keep prices down and ceramic coat them to bring performance up. Just build a mild DP and coat it. I think most people on here are just used to seeing stainless parts and assume that they perform better.

Why not coat the housing?

why is it pointless. coating is for a heat issue. im going to have the exhaust housing coated. dont see why you wouldnt.

Lets think about why you would build a stainless exhaust part. Cosmetics and for corrosion protection right? Well, ceramic exhaust coatings act as a thermal insulator but they also provide excellent corrosion protection so using stainless is pointless since you cant see the metal and the coating resists corrosion just like stainless.

As for the turbine housing I agree. A lot of heat is lost through the housing. The only negative I have heard of, but have not seen myself, is reduced seal life on that side of the turbo.

it all depends on how good of a deal you get on stainless. right now i adverage out at saving 50$ by using 304 stainless instead of mild steel for a manifold and downpipe.

good point, but for most people SS is quite a bit more cash. I forgot to mention I was assuming this.

Bail, did you ever notice that stainless steel schedual fittings are cheaper in 304 stainless than in mild steel?

The mild steel pieces are made in USA, and stainless in China.

go figure.
