im SURE this has been duscussed here before....
but here are some clues....

sir I = DOHC vtec
sir II =dohc VTEC (dead giveaway if the valve cover is origonal)

different color harness plugs, grey vs. some other color...

SiRI and SiRII were trim levels in various generations of the civic in Japan.they do not designate between different years of the motors.
you want to know how to distinguish pre OBD(88-91 US civic) motors from OBDI(92-95 US Civic)motors.

he is refering to SiR II motors (1992 up vtec B16A's) to distinguish between SiR I (Pre 1992 vtec B16A's)

yes,i realize that.SiRI and SiRII DO NOT distinguish between different years of the motors.there are SiR and SiRII trim levels in both the EF and EG generations.
read the link-it lists many ways to tell the difference in the OBDI and pre-OBD B16s.
many people use the SiRI and SiRII titles to designate between the two generations of motors, but it's not accurate:

EG lineup:

look at the colors of the sensor connectors,as well as the intake manifold differences listed in the above link.

1991 is the first year of SIR2. Also it should only have 1 O2 sensor if it is a SIR2. All SIR2 come with hydralic trannys but this will not tell you the truth.

look at the links i provided.this is straight from the Honda of Japan website.there was an SiRII in the EF series,of which NONE have hydro trannies.also notice that each model has listed the year it debuted.the SiRII EF came out in 1989.
