alternator problem

how does one brake their alternator? my car was woking just fine, and like 5min later, it wouldnt start. and i know it was the alternator cuz i would jump start it and it would idle for like 30seconds and die. not sure how i broke it, or even if its something that i did. how much would it cost to get it replaced and everything for a 95hondacivic cx? and no its not the battery

alternator is like 90$ at autozone
