Default idle kill (searched)

for a month or so now, i've been having some trouble with my 93 vtec prelude. it's got an h22a jdm engine with about 50k miles on it and it is a 5spd. my problem is this: intermittenly, when i make a quick stop, or sometimes just in low gears, the car will suddenly die.
if i'm stopping, since i'm clutching, the rpms just drop very quickly to 0 and the car dies. much quicker than the speed the needle usually has to drop to 700 idle rpms.
i'm i'm in low gears, and already moving, the tach needle will spike and start to kill if i don't give it lots of gas and then it jumps and keeps moving. sometimes it dies anyway, though.
last week i had a new 99 vtec tranny frankensteined and put on along with a new stage 2 clutch. for a few days, i thought that this fixed the problem, but this morning near college, it did it again.
sorry for the long post, but i wanted to try and give all the info i could think of. thanks a lot!

If you didn't have Vtech I'd think you had a valve adjustment problem. Any funny smell when it's doing this? Does it ever idle really low?

When I bent my valves, my car would randomly die like that. Try a compression test to see if you have bent valves.

If it was you Vtech you would probably just have a weak signal near power lines, so I don't think it's that.

it usually idles at around 900-1200, and it does it without my help. when the fans cycle on, of course, the idle drops lower, but then comes back up. that's when it's not acting up.

mine does the same thing. i had the head rebuilt after bending some valves. It could be the valves are set wrong or the timing belt might be too tight. Mine makes a whinning noise after its been running for a long time and then the rpm start to drop and the engine dies.

its not that...vtec doesnt have anything to do with it dying at idle

vtec happens above ~5000 remember?

It was a joke. I was poking fun at the guy who said something about Vtech. Sorry to bump this thread for useless crap...

Sure no problem...might want to check all the small stuff too if you've not done that already (plugs, plug wires, fuel filter)...

I don't get a whining noise but, I think my valves were set incorrectly as when they do an adjustment the number one exhaust valve can't be adjusted. Once when they did an adjustment and they did it when the engine was slightly warm my engine would die once it was heated up...not all the time but, intermittently...

That's weird that you say it idles lower when the fan comes on instead of higher...mine is just the opposite...

sorry to bump an old thread, but i have an update on this prob in case anyone else has any new ideas.

this dying thing happens more frequently now, and sometimes it won't start back up at all for a good while. 30-45 mins this morning. and yeah, there was a bad smell and white smoke inside the car coming into the cabin from the engine bay.

this wednesday i will be bringing it to my ace mechanic and getting him to fix it, and i'll post an update here as to what it was for those of you having the same trouble.
