Need help with tranny problem!!!
I have been on H-T for a while now just reading and learning...about two weeks ago I picked up an 88 hatch with a D16Y8 for $700 bucks and am now having tranny problems...I was driving down the highway at about 55 and the tranny all sudden revved real high...I though it popped out of gear or something but it was still in gear and the speed sensor was reading as the rpm's raised (i.e the speedo went to 100mph)....After kinda rolling for a sec it acted like it popped back into gear and drove fine for a few seconds and then did it again...so I babied it home...I looked at the axles and they look good...although the pass. side axle doesnt seem to be fully seated, so I pulled it and it looked good and put it back(at least as far as it would go)...Could this be caused by low tranny fluid, because the axle seal seemed to be leaking some...I haven't had a chance to look at the fluid level because I lost my good ole' wrench...If anyone could help me out it would be greatly appreciated..I need this car back on the road ASAP!
I thought the same thing about the clutch but it never felt like it was going bad before hand...and if it was the clutch would the speed seonsor sill be reading like it is??...and when it feels like it pops back into gear so to say, it's a little rough...thanks
I still say the clutch is slipping. That will make the revs and speedo read high, since the car *thinks* it's going as fast as the engine and tranny say it is.
It *might* be one of the springs in the clutch disk coming out of its mount. I've had it happen on a couple different Hondas - the spring pops out and wedges between the flywheel and clutch disk, and voila! - no more clutch! I haven't seen that condition cause the high rev/high mph condition, though; it usually just renders the clutch pedal useless. You can still drive on it, but shifting is a challenge (matching revs is a lost art!)
Whatever it is, it looks like you're going to be removing your transmission soon.

Thanks for the help....Myabe I will just swap in the Si tranny while I'm in there...damnit I was just hoping it was tranny fluid being low! lol...Don't really have the money to spend but gotta get it running I guess....and again thanks for the help guys
I had the exact same thing happen to me...
as i pulled off the highway my motor revved freely and my speedo went up really quick
turned out one of my axles pulled out of my trans...popped it back in and drove home..turns out that one of the cir-clips was wore out...
hope that helps
also if your clutch is burnt you will def smell it
