Default problems running.. car jerks

i just started up this 1993 del sol project car which i've been working on for a while.. it has a d16y8 stuck just so it can run.. its been sitting in my driveway. at first it idled at 2000 cuz it was cold then slowly dropped to around 1000.. what should my idle be? i started backing out of the driveway and everything is fine. when i start moving forward in 1st gear everything is fine but then when the clutch is released all the way, the car starts jerking back and forth as if i was shifting wrong. only i'm not shifting or anything. then i drop it into 2nd. everything's fine while the clutch is partially pressed down, but once i release the clutch the car starts jerking again.. when it gets to third gear i wasn't going fast enough but it felt fine in 3rd gear. does anyone know why this is? as long as the clutch is partially pressed it'll drive fine. once i release it the car starts jerking if i step on the clutch a little it drives smooth again.

before you get a new clutch which is most likely it...buy a clutch alignment tool ( not too expensive and you'll need it for installing new clutch anyway) and make sure your current clutch is aligned right. COULD be the problem and it will save you some money...as for the high revving, i have no clue...mine does it too when i first start it up...revs at close to 2000rpm and drops VERY slowly to about 1000rpms then after it warms up some and is driven it will idle at about 600rmp which is what the specs say it SHOULD idle at

You live in PA, its winter, its cold. Your car is doing just what it should: Idles high until car warms up, then as car warms up, idle decreases to normal. I think its controlled by the FITV? Fast idle thermal valve?

I'd bet the clutch. I like in PA and it isn' exactly cold now, and I don't suffer that.

Nah, I'm not referencing the jumpy driving in gear, I'm talking about the high idle on a cold start. I have a 98 d16y8 and mine does the same thing. We dont know what year car his y8 is from, but do the 99-00's differ from the 96-98's in that they dont have the FITV, or do they? I dont know.

I think so. I read what you typed wrong. Mine does that at startup too, them drops to about 650. But it shouldn' jump while driving, that is the clutch.

if you buy a complete clutch kit it should come with an alignment tool all the oem clutches ive installed come with them.

btw i idle at 800-1000rpm and i have a high idle when i start up. This sounds normal to me.

I would just get an exedy clutch... good product and good prices... especially if you aren't planning on keeping this motor for awhile... I think we bought one for about 230...

i had a "surging" problem on my 1992 laser. as soon as the clutch was fully engaged and the engine under load it surged and bucked just like bad shifting would cause. the higher the rpm's climbed the worse the surging. it drove me crazy as i tried everything. a fix ended up being cleaning the mass air sensor... not sure if your problem is the same but i figured i'd mention....

it's not happening when my clutch is fully engaged.. it's when it is fully disengaged

well, that's now how i read it... a stupid question, but the clutch is fully engaged [connecting engine to tranny] when the pedal is up. the clutch is disengaged [engine and tranny not connected] when the pedal is depressed. is that how you are describing it in your post?

if not, that makes no sense. a jerkyness when the clutch pedal is fully depressed?
