Keep DelSol and run SM2 or...
Just want some opinions. Also not up to speed on Hondas as I got out of it 2 years ago. I have a 94 Del Sol VTEC thats been sitting in a garage for more than a year. The tranny broke at my first track day. After that I got into bikes and ran some track days on that. I do plan to have it running this month. Should I run it for auto-x(sm2)? The only reason I ask is I noticed it flexes a lot and is heavier than my cousins hatch. Im guessing the lighter underpowered CRX would take me out. But would a heavier more powerful DelSol with a competent driver have a chance? The reason I ask is I can no longer race on a track, only choice is auto-x.
sm2 might be a little hard for the sol to compete in, but depending on what you have done to it, sts-2 might be fine. Locally I seem to do rather well against the miatas, probably would be a different story anywhere else though.

How well are you doing it that class? What mods do you have? Right now mines sitting on 15in Rotas/Azenis, Axxis Ultimates with Brembo blanks, GC/Koni yellows, factory B16A3 with a custom ES Oval/manderl bent exhaust. Also if I replace the old B16A3 with a jdm B16A I should still be legal right?
Come to think of it, FrostySol is right. That is an interesting STS2 car indeed.
Yes, STS2 is a new class basically for the 2 seater cars that were excluded from STS. So CRX, Miata, MR2, and del Sol. A del Sol VTEC would have the most power of any of them...but would be the heaviest.
Anyway, I don't think SM2 is where you want to be in an unknown car. There's some serious hardware even locally in SM2, and while you might be able to build a del Sol to compete in the class, it would be hideously expensive to do so.

depends on what your goal is. on a regional level, sure it will do fine with a great driver. years ago (we're talking back in 96-97 ish). i know a guy who went all out on a CSP del sol. this guy is a good driver and very experienced. his conclusion was it can not touch a fully prepped CSP 1st gen CRX. i'm not familiar with the newer autox classes anymore so.... just take this input FWIW.
More on a regional level, not national.
I asked about SM2 only cause thats what I was told a couple years ago. I guess STS2 I go then. Time to buy another rule book.

If you have any engine other than what came in the car its SM2.. No JDM swaps in ST.. No internal mods either.. In my oppinion it maybe competative localy but nationaly the CRX and Miata will owen the class!!
Good luck and have FUN.........

Because that's the rules for the class.

The Del Sol is not a great autocross car regardless of class and mods. The reasons are as you stated its too heavy and too flexible. But its a fun car to autocross. It has a short wheelbase and really benefits from stiffer springs and better shocks. If I were you I would leave the motor alone and just modify the suspension and run it in STS2.

Because the JDM 2nd-gen B16A has different pistons, cams, and ECU vs. the USDM B16A3 and B16A2.

Naw, any car can be a "great" autox car if you're just looking for fun and is still in your development stages anyways. If you said the del sol isn't competitive Nationally, I'd tend to agree more. The del Sol is a better autox car than any other EG/DC in one aspec which is shorter overall length and short wheel base. I think the chassis flex is over emphasized by many. I hardly think it is an issue at all. Just my opinion...
I've had a del Sol since 1995 and I've put over 110k miles on it so I do speak from experience.

I figure it was an equivalent motor. I thought the only difference was the headgasket(2 vs 3 layer)? I guess your right about the cams though. Sorry all my Honda knowledge was replaced with Yamaha knowlege these past couple of years.
I guess I'm a little late to this thread, but I was only reading the words when I caught your avitar out of the corner of my eye. Rad? I remember seeing that in the theaters. Somewhere I still have some limited-edition Rad stickers. (I'm still way into BMX.)
Getting back to the post, I'd vote for STS2 if you decide to keep the car.
