Default Need Help! Engine Rebuild Nightmares!! Experts please

Ok....so I did a rebuild on a B16 block with a ITR head.

here is the setup...

B16 Block.
B16 Crank
B18C5 Head
CTR Pistons
pr3 rods
ACL bearings
MSD ignition with coil blaster

Everything seemed fine and dandy during the assembly. Spun fine. No clearance issues.

Problem came during startup. Motor shakes extreme and makes what seems to be a knock sound! Motor will not stay running without gasing it.

sounds like a bearing issue but not sure if it can be something else....

give me your thoughts on what this can be cause my head is getting sick of dealing with it!

thanks guys

Head gasket thickness? Decks milled any?

What clearances have you checked and ok'd?

Nothing has been milled. Using a stock head gasket.

Compression read 240 across all cylinders.

All journals were measured and ok. Valve clearance is good. And bearing clearances should be within spec since I used ACL bearings and most would of been greens if i used oems.

where you sure on installing the timing belt? Check your plugs, wires, timing, fuel. If you had a compression tester it would be great and make sure that you have compression. Misfire can make your engine shake. Whats your idle like? Thats pretty much the basics to start finding issues on your motor.

Ill let you all know what the oil looks like later today when i pickup the fresh pan to dump it in....

The compression was good in all cylinders....240psi.

I did consider the fact it could be a misfire and maybe I will try and do the timing belt again just to make sure.

what im not sure about is the MSD...it was my first time putting one of those on....

i think i got it right cause it wasn't too confusing, what im not sure about though is on the RPM output signal wire....

when splicing into the dizzy harness i just tapped into that wire....was it required to cut it? lmk what ya think....thanks for the brainstorming!

oh yeah...as far as idle goes...it won't idle....the motor just dies unless you gas it.

Hi,

If its the first time with MSD and your not sure on the RPM output signal wire this is where i would be looking.

If its misfiring it will knock and can sound loud enough to make you think engine problems. I put my HT`s on wrong with another car and it was crazy loud. I had a panic to myself but then my mate noticed the leads.

its the msd 6 digital...i don't have the manual...just whats on the msd site.

i removed it. the car now will start and stay running but the timing seems to be off. its not even correctable by moving the distributor. motor also makes the same sound it did before but not quite as loud.

hmmm

Thats the same one on i'm using on one of my cars ( i love it) have you tried to disable the advance timing so you can go to base timing? Once you have it a base timing you can adjust the distubtor. let us know how it goes!

Check that timing belt. Thats the classic off a tooth symptom.

Ok...update for all those who care..

Took off MSD...started running good. Redid timing belt and removed all Accessory belts.

The noise was from rubbing on the timing belt cover and my buddy had the wrong belt on the AC which was forcing the tensioner to hit the power steering.

All noises are gone and engine sounds good.

Now to figure out why the hell the car is throwing a CEL of Electronic Load Detector?
