Ebay: Bomz air intakes: $25 - AEM intakes: $180!! What's the difference?!? Quiet intake..
Sheesh I saw this on Ebay and confused...obviously AEM is a good brand but is it really different from say..BOMz or SHOGUN (Mugen)???
I'm looking to get an air intake but don't know what to get. What I really want is an intake that is not that loud and gives you a nice noise instead of that annoying bazooka noise I hear here where I live (ironically they are Hondas and Ricans-VIVA!). I know this kid has it and it sounds like a car from Back to the Future...(..yes I remember!!...who didn't like those movies?) Thanks for your help in advance.

The only difference is an air filter. Get a cheap intake and put a K&N air filter on it. The piping is just metal tubing, and AEM uses K&Ns anyway. You can paint it or powdercoat it a cool color even if you want (black will not absorb heat as well, good idea FYI) and you basically have an AEM intake for 1/3-1/2 the price.

You wont hear any difference i bet with the filter...youll still get the growl no matter what you use. The K&N is trusted to perform and keep the air clean, adn that's what you want!
actually, i beleive AEM started making their own filters 2 years ago....i know for a fact my AEM filter is not K&N...at least theres no distinguishable marks to say so....
either way, like everyone said, and like every response in this kinda thread that happens once a week, theres really no difference besides teh bling bling name....
as for sound, its not like an exhaust system....the car is much noiser on that side of combustion......IMO, and ITOO all my friends, the coolest sound a 4cyl ever made was an f22 at 6k w/ AEM CAI......of course that sound changed w/ a bypass valve...those will reduce volume a bit
in general, a decent intake will not sound like a bazooka...of course, i know what a bazooka sounds like, so you get the idea

If you don't want a loud intake get the CAI it is a little quieter than the short ram. I have the CAI on my EX and the short ram on my LX and the short ram is really loud in comparison. I also agree with everyone else buy the cheap one and slap a K&N on it.
Also AEM uses K&N air filters they just put their logo on the filter. Companies do this all the time. They can buy the filter cheaper from K&N than they could probably make it for. The directions that come with the intake even tell you to buy a K&N filter recharge kit. At least mine did 3 years ago, as well as the one I bought for my brothers civic a year or so ago.

There is more difference than just the filter guys.
Fit, finish, and legality are the real differences that matter. If you want argue that the filter is the real important factor than is that new filter gonna add that much more HP and keep you legal? The intake alone only adds 5 max hp(maybe less) so it doesnt really matter.

Air intakes do not pollute the environment. O2 simulators, turbos, test pipes and high flow cats are the real problems. And Exhausts for noise violations.
Making air intakes 'illegal' is retarded; i dont even know why they do it...

So Legendaryyaj besides the whole legality issue what are the real design differences between them besides price and filter?? Enlighten us all, you left us hangin.

CAI eh? Yeah I might get them but should I worry about it getting grime and wet since they get placed at the bottom of your car?

8 inches with the covers on should still be fine. Only way to hydro lock with the stock covers on is if your car is already in a lake or pond. By then, hydro locking is the least of your worries.

I have had mine on for 3 years and haven't had any problems sucking up anything and I live in Oregon where it rains constantly. They do get dirtier faster but its not to bad.
If CARB legalities are not an issue go for the cheapie with an upgraded filter. On my B20vtec before I went ITB's...I had an AEM with HKS filter for carb reasons. For ***** and giggles I put an APC air intake that was lying around on it and ran it on the dynojet over at Hookups and it actually made 5hp to the wheels more than my previous set up! Go figure

the quality of the air filter is the biggest part of any intake. It will make or break what little performance gains you receive. It will also change the sound of the system drastically. I had an ebay filter(loud as hell), switched to a universal 3" K&N filter(whistles more, but overall quieter, has better tone).
