92 Civic SI, CEL kicking kicking in ~5000rpm
New to the forums, I've been following/reading for a few months now.
As my screen name states had a 4door GSR stolen, and so I bought 92 civic si. I had it for a few months now, and I just got a CEL. The CEL sometimes turns on and sometimes doesn't when I rev it to 5000RPM, maybe a little more (possibly when VTEC kicks in). Vtec seems like it's working fine because the revs seem to climb even faster after 5000rpms. Also sometimes the speedo doesn't work at all, but the RPM's and everything else in the cluster do work.
Is it two seperate problems? Speed sensor or Cluster or both? I'm confused.

BlueIntegraBoy, thanks for the answer.
It's the VSS even though the speedo dies some of the time? The check engine light turns on consistently around 5500rpm.

If your speedo and odo doesn't work, it's your VSS. Usually a CEL will turn on for that. Maybe you just have to clean the VSS. The CEL that turns on around 5,500 RPMs, might have something to do with VTEC.
Sorry I'm an idiot, I should explain everything first. Integraboy thanks for the help. The odo does works, the speedo just sometimes cut out but not all the time. The CEL does come on I believe when VTEC kicks in, should i just replace VSS? I dont want to have to replace it if I dont have to. I've had a friend look at it, he believes its the VSS and the Cluster because when the speedo just fails, it's just that.
Thanks for the help. I just want to get some opinions before I start trying to fix it. Thanks

It's only the VSS with the odo and speedo go out at the same time. They both run off the VSS. It's most likely your cluster (speedometer).
