Mini Me or Turbo - Vote!
Okay, I'm the proud owner of a 89 DX with only 60k miles, but there is one problem with this car. Its TOO slow. Yes, it is only my daily driver.. but with the AC on, it goes like a snail... and good luck passing on the highway - too dangerous. So, I've been doing some thinking..
If I go Mini-me, I probably won't gain much power, and it will be a pain in the ***. ECU swap, MPFI conversion, Swapping head... I'd be taking apart a perfectly good engine and I don't really want to do that for a torqueless SOHC VTEC head.
Now, I ran across this. http://www.homemadeturbo.com/turbo_projects/d15b2/
a DPFI Home made turbo. Looks easy, cheap, and I think i'll probably make more power than I would with a Mini-me.
Edit: If I boost i'll be doing MPFI, but will be keeping the head and everything else.
Vote based on cost, power gains, and relibility.
How would my low mileage D15 handle a small RHB5 turbo? This turbo is stock @7psi, but could I turn it down to 5psi if I plan on throwing it on my engine?

Do it, woo! I think i'd be worth swapping the MPFI Mani and Si ECU in there, though. The difference amount you get out of a DPFI Turbo setup and a MPFI Turbo Setup on the same engine is absurd. It's worth the little extra work and $$
If you have all the turbo parts lying around, though, hook it up! Should be a lot better than stock B2.

i've heard about that DPI turbo and almost did it to my b1 i just dont feel it would be reliable.
MPFI or mini me then boosting or swaping will be alot easier and safer.

I'd rather not pull the head.

How reliable with 5psi be on my stock D15.. Keep in mind it only has 60k on it.. and I want it to last a long time.

Thats what I did...but IMHO Turbo > Mini-Me
Mini-me felt good, but the power that the turbo added blew me away

I think that if you get some engine management (like Z-Dyne's OBD-0) and get everything tuned, not for crazy performance but for good city driving and longetivity, I think that you would have a reliable turbo car on your hands.

It'll only cost a few hundred bucks... I'd be using a probe turbo.

Sounds good.. but is that ECU necessary for relibility? ECU Might be a problem also, car is auto. What if I were to tune 5lbs with an FPR/Wideband o2..

Get the D-series turbo...that way if you do end up blowing the engine you can up grade to a larger D-series and still use your turbo kit. D-series are pretty cheep, that's why I would do it.
