Default supercharger vs turbo

A novice question but... what is the difference between a supercharger and a turbo. As in power gain both torque and HP. Plus's and minus's on each. Best bet for a 96ex d18y8 engine.

First off----not being rude but you have a d16----okay now
Superchargers like Jackson's would be good for you since you don't want to work on your car a lot. Most low boosting forms of FI will be reliable, but Jackson's are proven. Turbos---go with a kit from someone like greddy or HKS or Apexi. Keep the boost levels low, between 6-8psi.

Superchargers are belt driven.
Turbos are powered by the exhaust. http://www.howstuffworks.com has an example of how a turbo works. Probably one on a supercharger as well.

There is a "loss of power from using the belt to drive power but, it is always moving "enough" air.

While with a turbo you have to wait for it to spool up there fore power really doesn't exsist until higher RPM's which depend on the trim of your exhaust blades on the turbo.....yadda yadda there are many many determining factors for both sides however, a Supercharger would be best for street driving since it provides pwoer throughout the power band.

hey spade thanks, I checked it out and got me some knowledge on the topic, It didn't really go into to much detail on a supercharger though, so my remaining question would be: A turbo is adjustable as in Psi's and boost due to the psi's is that theory applied in a supercharger, if so, how.

Yup, with the supercharger you change the pulley sizes.

Edit: Oh, here is a somewhat decent explanation of the superchager. http://www.jacksonracing.com/pages/howorksh.html

so it's not something you can do while driving infact it's kinda you get what you get. where as a turbo you can alter the mix at any given moment? granted you have a controller that will allow you to. then another question (again) not covered in that article or the others I glanced at. A turbo timer? does it just hold the turbo from creating boost until a certain point or what?

turbo timers keep the turbo running after the car is shut off. It allows it to cool properly as to not damage the bearings.

With the turbo you don't actually modify that you modify the Wastegate....which opens at a specific PSI to maintain that PSI.....you control that wastegate and make it open at a higher PSI.

Doesn't matter, it is technical isn't it. Besides it gets boring here.

so it looks to me that the Centrifugal Superchargers are the way to go. They give the best constant boost throughout the entire powerband. so i ask why turbo a car when you can supercharge it and have instant boost? is it that a turbo is just easier to customize (tune) to daily driving conditions opposed to having only one size pulley (gear)?

turbos tend to make more power total.

You know how ac takes power away from you car from the pulleys, same thing with sc.

gotcha could that be corrected with an under drive pulley, so essentially the supercharger dosen't suck anything away or are under drive pullies not that great?
