Default How important are ignition upgrades for turbo?

It was suggested to me that i get an MSD Digital 6 and a Blaster coil (huc?) to complement my f-max turbo setup on my h22a prelude. Is this absolutely necessary?

i'm sure this is useless information, but it really couldn't hurt.

no it's not necessary. Stock ignition will provide enough spark, assuming your running 10psi or less.

The stock honda ignition is pretty damn good.

Like Art says, Keep It Simple Stupid. Make sure your setup is running fine with minimal upgrades, then slowly add things. In this case, I would add ignition after I got the other turbo essentials running smoothly. I'm pretty sure the stock ignition is reliable up to 14-15 psi, but maybe not.

If anything, put in colder plugs and better wires. Ignition, coil and cap aren't quite so necessary unless you are running insane amounts of boost.

I have heard the same about not needing it unless you run above 10psi. Though, i have also heard that it will help to smooth out your power band.

absolutely necessary: no.
helpful: yes.

It will smooth power response, improve gas mileage, allow wider spark gaps (but not too wide), and allow you run a hotter plug.

If your car has an internal coil, then converting to an external coil is a big improvement since the internal coil design gets really darn hot. Since you are talking Digital 6 then you have distributor-less ignition, right? I thought all H22a's have a distributor.

Hmmmmm.

I always follow this equation: More Air = More Fuel = More Spark. When I add more of any of these, it follows to add more of the others, and tune it. A well tuned engine is on a fine balance. When I first turbocharged my D16Z6 3 years ago, I had detonation at 5.5psi, and an MSD 6A remedied it perfectly.

Aftermarket ignitions become necessary once you hit ~275 whp. Most Honda/Acura ignitions are ok up until this point. The pressure within the cylinder at high boost lvels tend to blow the spark out creating mis fires and sputtering. This is when ignition is most critical. Thus, tighter plug gaps, aftermarket ignitions and coils help tremendously. If you are producing under 275, the stock ignition *should* work fine. An aftermarket ignition will not hurt you by any means, rather it should help smooth out the power curve.

You are thinking DIS-2 and DIS-4 for cars with Coil packs. The Digital 6 and Digital 7 are ignitions for cars with distributors.

Can you afford it ? Yes ? Get it !

No? I would save for one, but is won't kill you under 9-10 psi.

It WILL make a difference, not matter your boost, but it's not an essential under 230whp

I recommend it...

X2 gives MSD or similar...

either way is good. smoothing out the power band is always a good thing and preventing "stock ignition mishaps" helps, too.

You can have just as many aftermarket ignition mishaps that you can w/ the stock ignition system.

If it's not broke, don't fix it. The stock ingition systems from Honda are probably some of the best OEM systems.

Ok, you guys saying that the extra air and fuel can "blow the spark out", let me run this past you.

My car runs AWESOMELY about 20% of the time... Other times is seems to fall on its face and sputter when I exceed 6500 RPM... Could this be from the Coil not putting out enough spark? Should I get a Blaster coil and new Cap for it?

I've adjsuted fuel and timing til the cows come home, No luck... just one out of 5 runs in my car feels SUPREMELY fast compared to the sputtering that happens the other 4...

Help!

I noticed you had a zdyne unit, what pulse width are you running at around 6200rpm? boost?

LSTURBO, lemme get my car back on the road, I'm letting my buddy borrow the laptop I use until it runs again... One of those times the car was running it's *** off, at 8 SPI I WAXED a C-5 vette and lost my tranny somewhere in the process... I'v got a 90 LS tranny to go back in it, but the clutch is different in the 90's so I gotta buy a clutch too

Damn Mid Model Changes!!!

i had similar sputtering above 5500rpm....solved with ZEX plugs
