Is it possible to use a MP3/ Ipod without a headunit?
I could have sworn I saw a post in one of the forums showing an install where the person used an Mp3 player (portable) without having a head unit in his car.....I searched, but came up empty.
Can you just run it thru an amp?
I don't have a head unit in the car, and frankly, I don't want one. I am however getting sick of having no music.
Thanks guys!

Yes, you can infact do this. You will need a few things though.
First you will need to hook up your amps to a remote unit, so you can turn them all one.
Next since you have to headunit you will need to run an eq with crossover so you can send the signal to all your amps. Either get a eq with a build in line driver (since the mp3 player will not give a very good signal). I would check into something like clarion's in-dash 7 band eq. You can mount it wherever and it has a line driver built in to run your sound and all your amps (they can be found online around $59.99).
Thats pretty much it, just a few simple changes. With this you get all those mp3's at your fingertips, some eq and crossover control for the sound and a nice signal output to feed the amps.

Ok, don't have any amps in the car now. I don't have subs or anything like that...I think I have speakers in the doors and that is about it. I would like to do this as cheap as possible.
I am by no means an audiophile. I am more concerned with having some music...and being able to bring the Mp3 player with me when the car is unattended.
Not looking to add anything "in dash." Any suggestions on where to start? What exactly do I need?
Thanks!

if you dont want to add anything aftermarket, and dont have a stock amp in the least... then you are out of luck.... It would be like running a home sterio system's speakers from the headphone jack of a cd player alone...
your best bet would be to buy some nice cheap 2 inch portable speakers, or something of the like, and grabbing a 12v car outlet power adapter to run them... put them on th efloor, or taped to the dash, and there you go.

OK...point taken.
Is is possible to do this on say, $300 budget?
Does this list look complete:
Amp- what kind to run my two front speakers? They are Pioneers with a built in tweeter. I doubt they can handle too many watts....so I suppose a fairly inexpensive 2 channel amp is the ticket?
EQ- Something cheap that I can mount somewhere out of sight once the proper levels are dialed in.
Cables/ wiring- the factory harness is in the car and has speaker wires going to the speakers in the doors. Should I just extend the factory speaker wires into the amp? What else would I need? RCA's? How does the MP3 player "plug in?"
I really appreciate your guys help on this....I can build a race car no problem...I just don't mess with the audio stuff too much.....vtec has always been my favorite track until now

( I'll be doing this exact set up in a few weeks, but not using fleamarket parts.)
